The development of good teamwork was a pleasing feature for many of Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday.
In the 13th grade Private Asset Awakeri Aces showed good team combinations, as well as individual skill to beat Tarawera Medical Centre Kawerau 5 - 0. Cameron Rio-Kumeroa had a strong game in goal, while Thomas Attewell earned player of the day for his efforts. Jaiden Ibbetson (4) and Guy Kamphorst were the scorers, and Terri-Anne Hollis came close a number of times.
The CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons played well in patches against Ohope Blue Socks in the 13th grade. Unfortunately some key defensive errors let their opponents score some soft goals. Dragons never stopped trying and to their credit, replied with a well worked goal, finished off by Liam Richards. Player of the day was Shaun Musgrave who made some great tackles. Caleb Sheather and Pete Dowden also played strongly. The final score was 6 -1 to Ohope.
Jim Saddlery Awakeri Knights had a good outing against Opotiki Natives in the 11th grade. Excellent positional play set the scene for goal scorers Samuel Burgess, Kurt Turpie and Toby Kirkpatrick, with Burgess named player of the day. Joshua Klein-Ovink made some top saves in goal, and he combined well with defenders Brooke Theobald and Carrie Fynn.
A Nikoli Christensen hat-trick earned him player of the day for Awakeri Jets in the 9th grade against Saints. Jets ran out the winners 4 - 2, with Caleb Carter the other scorer. Jamie Arrol, Tiann Brownless and Shane Hope were busy in the middle of the park.
In the 8th grade premier division, Awakeri Tigers beat Otakiri 4 - 2. Aaron Fretwell held his position very well on the wing and sent in some good crosses to set up chances, which Lucas Schlepers (2), Joshua Ruiter and Logan Wood turned into goals.
Awakeri Sharks had a good game against Paroa in the 8th grade 1st division, Paroa winning 4 - 1. Jared Turvey earned player of the day for trying hard and sticking to his position.
Glorious autumnal sunshine welcomed Awakeri Rovers in their 6th grade fixture on Saturday. Sustained hard work by all players earned Rovers a comfortable 5 - 0 victory at Thornton School. Good goalkeeping by Samantha Eivers in the first half, and Jacob Davis in the second half, kept the Thornton team out. The goal scorers were player of the day Danyon Arrol (2), Jacob Davis, Cody Baker-Bragg and Lachlan Butler.
Awakeri T-Rexes also played Thornton in the 6th grade and lost 6 - 0. Player of the day Zoe Bennett did great work in goal.
Awakeri Rockets had a fantastic 6th grade game against Otakiri Pukekos, coming away with a good win. Their player of the day was Liam McCormick, who impressed with his energy.
