There were lots of goals scored, for and against Awakeri's soccer teams
on Saturday.
In the 15th grade, Proactive Chairs Awa-Edge were short of players, but they
put in a great first half against Whakatane. Goals to Luke Overworth and Madison
Constantine had the half time score 2 - 3. However, Awa-Edge fell away in the
second half, eventually losing 10 - 3. Billy Brooks earned player of the day
for his good work in defence.
In the 13th grade, Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces had a good first half
against Kawerau. Aces held a handy lead at the break but Kawerau came back well
with Aces down a player through injury. Aces eventually took the game 6 - 4.
Jayden Haddock scored a memorable overhead kick from outside the box as part
of his hat-trick. Guy Kamphorst and Jaiden Ibbetson also scored. Mark Morrison
was Aces' player of the day with some hard running in the midfield.
The CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons played their best match of the year against
0hope in the 13th grade. If a long range shot by Ben Fretwell had managed to
go in off the crossbar, the scores would have been level with only ten minutes
remaining. It wasn't to be and this was the turning point, with Dragons letting
in three soft goals over the last few minutes. Players of the day were Jarrod
Pinkerton and Ben Fretwell. The final score was 4 - 0 to Ohope.
Awakeri Macattacks were lethargic in their 11th grade game against Whakatane
Bullets. Their second half was better. A Sam McPherson cross provided Ash Roozendaal
with a chance, which he put away well. Jesse Ingle was player of the day.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights played James
Street. The game was reasonably even in the first half, although Knights got
out to 4 - 0 through some good football. The final score was considerably higher
as Knight took control. David Klein Ovink was player of the day, with his passing
an asset. Joshua Klein Ovink, Samuel Burgess and Matthew Eveleens also shone.
In the 9th grade premier division, Awakeri Jets put in a respectable performance
against The Force Whakatane. Hannah Thompson's determined effort had her named
player of the day. The Force won 4 - 0.
Awakeri Tigers had an exciting 8th grade premier game with Whakatane Jaguars.
Tigers had played their hearts out to be 3 - 3 with Jaguars, but the Whakatane
side scored a last minute winner. Twins Tom and Aaron Fretwell shared player
of the day for their great combination up front. Tom Holani (2) and James Thompson
were Tigers' scorers.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Sharks had a good 2 - 2 draw against the Whakatane
Black
Knights. Mekaela Learmond and Jalen Heberly scored the Sharks' goals. Player
of
the day was earned by Samantha Looney for working hard throughout.
Awakeri 7th Grade Galatea Vets White Pointers played Otakiri in an exciting
match that led to a 0 - 0 score. Player of the day Jack Du Toit had an outstanding
game and Brayden Phillips was also in top form.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had a good outing on Saturday. They won their
7th grade game with James Street Fireballs 3 - 0. Justin Perkins got player
of the day.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Rovers came back well in the second half against Ohope,
but lost 3 - 4. Player of the day Calum made some very good saves in goal.
Awakeri Rockets were short on players for their 6th grade game with Whakatane
Marlins. Marlins kindly lent them a player. Isaiah Davidson made some good tackles
for Rockets and was named player of the day. Marlins won 1 - 0.
Awakeri T-Rex welcomed Corben Wilson for his first game back when they played
Whakatane Titans in the 6th grade. Maania Roia was T-Rex's player of the day.
