Some spectacular goals and a thrilling local derby were notable features of
Awakeri's soccer teams' games this week.
Awakeri Rockets played very well in their 6th grade game against Thornton Two,
winning 2 - 0. Tommy Rosewarne's great support play saw him named player of
the day for Rockets.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri T-Rexes lost to Saints. Jenae Brownless was T-Rexes
player of the day.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had a good 7th grade game against Rangitaiki
Rockets. Keely Forbes and Felicity Klein-Ovink put together some good moves.Blues
won 3 - 1, with Taylor Harte the player of the day.
The Galatea Vets Awakeri White Pointers

3 - 1. Player of the day went to Georgia Robinson-Kearn for her excellent skills
as goalie.
Awakeri Sharks 8th grade had a good game, with a 2 - 1 win against Thornton.
Mekaela
Learmond earned player of the day for working hard and having a couple of close
shots at the goal. Samantha Looney also had a good game with her huge kicks.
In the 8th grade premier division, two spectacular goals from player of the
day Liam Sanson brought his Awakeri Tigers teams a 2 - 0 win against Saints.
Sanson scored one with a powerful shot from the wing and the other from a volley.
Tigers' good positional play set them up for the win.
Awakeri Jets came up against a good Kawerau side in the 9th grade premier division.
Shane Hope was player of the day for Jets, with good support from Tiaan Brownless.
Caleb Carter was the scorer in a 1 - 6 loss.
Awakeri Macattacks shouldn't have had half time in their 11th grade premier
game against Allandale. Macattacks put in a superb first half effort, with good
teamwork on display. Allandale scored a flukey goal just before the break, and
then two more after it. A great run from Jesse Ingle got the ball to Sam McPherson
who beat a couple of defenders for Awakeri's goal in a 1 - 3 result. Richard
Hikipene and Rory MacGregor did very well in their turns in the Awakeri goal.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights had a big win
against Thornton. Cameron Morrison stood out in an excellent second half team
performance. He was well supported by David Klein-Ovink, Shayne Fortune and
chief goalscorer Samuel Burgess.
The two Awakeri 13th grade teams squared off against each other in a thrilling
local derby. The Private Asset Management Aces, having only lost one game this
year seemed extremely confident as the game kicked off. However, early on they
realized that the CJ McIndoes Dragons were not there just to roll over, in fact
they played their best football of the season. Both of the teams shared a pretty
even amount of territory and possession. The Aces tried time and time again
to break the Dragons defence, but as the clock ticked on, it only got harder.
The first goal came from Jaiden Ibbetson who, after sidestepping the Dragons
last defender managed to find the back of the net with a powerful shot. In the
second half the Dragons came out breathing fire and after only a few minutes
they had also managed to find the back of the net. The battle continued to rage
for the remainder of the game and the Aces eventually pulled away to a 4-1 lead.
The Dragons supporters never stopped cheering their team on and in the dying
second they were rewarded with an amazing second goal as their lone forward
made the most of a one on one with the Aces keeper.
Defenders Renko Barkema and Shaun Musgrave were standout performers for Dragons,
while new player Alex Albright had some good touches. For Aces, it was the "Jayden
Show' with Jayden Haddock and Jaiden Ibbetson causing lots of problems for defenders.
The Aces player of the day was Terri-Anne Hollis for great positional play leading
to her first goal of the year. The final score Aces 4 Dragons 2.
Very good sportsmanship, despite a heavy loss, was a feature of Proactive Chairs
Awa-Edge 15th grade game against James Street. Referee Neil Wahrlich ensured
a good clean game, which James Street won 14 - 0. Jacob Gregory's hard work
saw him named player of the day.
