Big improvement in play from the last time they met was a common theme for Awakeri's teams as they took on their opponents on Saturday.
In the 15th grade, Proactive Chairs Awa-Edge met Ohope. Even though they weren't up to their best, Awa-Edge made Ohope work hard for their 7 - 0 win. Billy Sturme's determined defence earned him player of the day.
In the 11th grade premier division, Awakeri Macattacks showed huge improvement by holding Ohope to a 1 - 1 draw. Their previous results had been heavy losses against this team. The team was named players of the day for their teamwork. In a replay of last week's action, Sam McPherson's cross picked out Ash Roozendaal, and he scored.
Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights were up against the classy Opotiki team in the 11th grade 1st division. Opotiki had beaten the Knights by six goals in their last meeting, but in a much improved performance Knights held Opotiki to a 1 - 3 result. Excellent goal keeping by Kurt Turpie and Cameron Morrison made Opotiki work for their win. Player of the day Carrie Fynn set a good example for her team mates with some determined football.
Awakeri Jets were short on numbers for their 9th grade match with Whakatane Giants. Jets put up a good first half showing, but Giants ran away with the game to win 8 - 1. Ethan Vincent worked hard out on the field and was named player of the day. Tiaan Brownless was good in goal in the first half. Jamie Arrol worked hard and Nikoli Christensen was Jets' scorer.
The wet and cold were the memorable features of Awakeri Tigers' 2 - 0 loss to Ohope in the 8th grade.
Awakeri Sharks had a good game with a 1 - 0 win against Matata in the 8th grade. Jalen Heberly scored the only goal with an accurate shot. Joey Flanagan earned player of the day for his big kicks and fast running.
Performance Zone Awakeri Blues got their 7th grade game against James Street started before the rain. Player of the day Josh Shakes helped the Blues win 2 - 0.
6th grade Awakeri T Rex played Kawerau in the drizzle. There were smiles all around. The player of the day was Korben Wilson.
Awakeri Rockets did well in their 6th grade game, drawing 2 - 2 with Ohope Lions. Chanel Crawley-Anderson worked hard out on the field and was named player of the day. Liam McCormick was also in top form.
