Awakeri's soccer teams enjoyed their first round of league games, with fine weather an added bonus.
There was a good atmosphere at the 6th grade game between Awakeri Rovers and Dallisons Kawerau. The game was even, but two break away goals gave Kawerau a 3 - 1 win. Jacob Hannah was Rovers player of the day.
Awakeri T-Rexes had to defend quite a bit against Ohope Wanderers in the 6th grade. Goalkeeper Ella Strachan was player of the day and Emily Julian scored the goal.
A 3 - 1 win to the aptly named Awakeri Rockets, over Kawerau, started their season. Player of the day was Te Manu Herrick. The goals scored by Quintin Wood, Isaiah Davidson and Tommy Rosewarne.
Galatea Vets Awakeri White pointers had their first game for the season, a good 5 - 2 win over Thornton in the 7th grade. The whole team played well and was very enthusiastic. Player of the day went to Kyla Kirkpatrick for scoring a hat trick of goals. Jaspreet Dharmet & Sophia Van der Gulik also played well.
Also in the 7th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Bluesdid well, with a 3 - 2 against Otakiri Pirates. Justin Perkins was the player of the day.
In the 8th grade premier division, Awakeri Tigers had a tough game against Whakatane Jaguars, going down 0 - 7. Lucas Schlepers was Tigers player of the day.
Awakeri Sharks had an exciting 8th grade 1st div game at Matata, winning 4 - 3 with goals to Jared Turvey, Bleyne Heberly, Daniel Gow and player of the day Dillon Murray.
Awakeri Jets started well in their 9th grade premier div game against The Force Whakatane, but eventually lost convincingly. Tiaan Brownless was Jets player of the day. TJ Penberth also did well in goal.
In the 11th grade premier division, Awakeri Macattacks also started well. However Whakatane Bullets were too strong, winning 8 - 1. For Awakeri, defenders Kale Young and Zac Fretwell, and player of the day Rory MacGregor put on a mature display in the Macattacks goal.
Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights evened up the 11th grade results with an 8 - 1 win against Whakatane Eagles. Knights put together some very good team play. Carrie Fynn, who battled on through injury and debutant Ben Murphy shared player of the day honours. Goal scorers were Toby Kirkpatrick, Kurt Turpie and Ash Roozendaal.
The CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons came up against a well drilled Whakatane Orcas team in the 13th grade. Dragons didn't have a great first half and found themselves several goals down at halftime. Their second half performance was much better with all players moving to the ball and challenging their opponents. Player of the day for Dragons was Zoe Johnston, who tackled well all day. Others to shine were Renko Barkema and Pete Dowden. Ethan Kilgarriff scored Awakeri's only goal.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Aces put their passes together well against Whakatane Rangers in the 13th grade, winning 7 - 3. Whakatane Rangers were no push over and defended hard throughout the whole game. All but one of Aces seven goals were as a result of Awakeri working the ball through the mid-field. The other was from Jayden Haddock, who scored a spectacular goal direct from a corner. The keeper could only watch as it whistled into the far top corner of the net. Haddock scored another three goals, with two from Jaiden Ibbetson and one from Guy Kamphorst. Aces player of the day was Matthew Orr-McKeown who showed excellence in defence.
Outstanding goalkeeping from Matthew Richmond helped keep Proactive Chairs Awa-Edge in their 15th grade game with Whakatane. Awa-Edge opened the scoring through Luke Overworth and were shaded 3 - 2 at half time with another goal to Madison Constantine. However player of the day Richmond was injured in the second half and Whakatane ran away with the game.
