Awakeri's youngest teams showed the way, in terms of their
results on Saturday.
Awakeri Rovers had a short trip to Te Teko for their 6th grade game. Rovers
were into their stride immediately, leading 4 - 0 at half time. Jacob Hannah
scored first. Next came goals from Jacob Davis, whose second was an 'absolute
corker', screwing into the top right hand corner of the Te Teko goal. A more
resolute Te Teko defence started the second half and Rovers couldn't add to
their score. Their player of the day was Jacob Hannah.
Awakeri Rockets fondly farewelled coach Jayne Wood with a very convincing win,
7 - 0, against Allandale in the 6th grade.
Awakeri T Rex played well against Saints in the 6th grade. There was a lot of
team spirit and fun. The player of the day was Tara van Beekhuizen who tries
hard in every game. Mathew Webb and Emily Julian contribute well every week
also.
7th Grade Galatea Vets Awakeri White Pointers had a tough game against a talented
James Street Stormers side, but managed to secure a good 3 -1 win. Player of
the day went to Jack Du Toit who showed some very good ball skills. Sean Young
and Jamie Findlay also played very well.
Also in the 7th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Blues had their best game ever!
They were low on numbers, but fought hard against Saints. In an action packed
game, Blues ran out of steam late and the score ended up 5 - 2 to Saints. Jayden
Hoefsloot's goalkeeping earned him player of the day. Blues goals were scored
by Taylor Harte and Josh Shakes.
The Awakeri Sharks had a loss of
2 - 1 against the Rangitaiki Stormers in the 8th grade. Daniel Gow earned player
of the day.
In the 8th grade premier league, Awakeri Tigers played Whakatane Jaguars. Jaguars
were too strong, winning 5 - 1. Player of the day Logan Wood fought hard and
almost scored for Tigers. Liam Sanson was their goalscorer.
Hitting the woodwork several times was not enough for Awakeri Jets in the 9th
grade against Whakatane Force. Hannah Thompson is showing steady improvement,
she was named player of the day. Tiaan Brownless and Shane Hope also did well.
Force won the game 4 - 0.
In the 11th grade premier league, Awakeri Macattacks played very well against
Whakatane Bullets. Whakatane scored a good first goal, to lead 1 - 0 at half
time. Macattacks were unlucky not to score, with Bullets eventually gaining
a 3 - 0 win. Ash Roozendaal's good ball skills had him named player of the day.
Jim's Saddlery Awakeri Knights held the lead till ten minutes to go, courtesy
of a Samuel Burgess goal, in their 11th grade game against Ohope City. Knights
played well as a team, passing the ball around effectively. Player of the day
Kurt Turpie had an excellent game in goal, however City scored three late goals
to win 3 - 1.
Rhys Cram's good work in defence earned him player of the day for Private Asset
Management Awakeri Aces. Aces won their 13th grade game against Ohope Blue Socks
4 - 0. A Jaiden Ibbetson hat-trick and a long heading duel between the two teams
were the highlights of the game. That's what the kids said.
Here's Paul's version of events:
This
week the 13th grade Aces played Ohope. Before the game our team talk centered
around two things, firstly Getting the basics right, secondly
Teamwork.Wow!! Every single player listened!!! The team gave one of their best
performances of the season against an opposition that certainly wasnt
a walk in the park. The scoring started after about 10 minutes when Jaiden Ibbetson
managed to out run the oppositions defence and slipped one into the back of
the net. Shortly before half time he followed this up with a second goal. In
the second half, Ohope came out with more passion and gave our whole team a
real workout. The player of the day went to Rhys Cram for his determination
in defence acting as our last man Im sure the Ohope forwards were
cursing Rhys. Every time they made a break, Rhys closed them down and cleared
the ball to safety. Jaiden Ibbetson scored a third goal with ten minutes remaining
then Ohopes luck finally ran out as another powerful shot (from
JI again) hit the post, bounced out, hit the back of their defender and went
in past a very tired looking Ohope keeper. Final score 4-0 to the Aces
well done team!!!
The 13th grade CJ McIndoe's Awakeri Dragons, who have steadily
improved over the last few weeks, came up against the unbeaten Opotiki team.
Although Dragons defended bravely, Opotiki managed to score five goals. This
was still a great effort by Dragons, who are playing some good football. Players
of the day for the home team were Pete Dowden, who tackled fiercely, and Leah
Sheather, who defended strongly.
In the 15th grade, Proactive Chairs Awa-Edge had to draft in 13th grade Mikaela
Hancox to field a team against Whakatane. Whakatane started with a quick soft
goal, then Awa-Edge started to battle hard and it was late in the half before
Whakatane scored again. Despite stirling efforts from Ben Hancox, Madison Constantine,
the skilful Lindsey Cotter and player of the day Gareth Rowlands, Awa-Edge couldn't
sustain the pressure. Whakatane ran away with the game to win 10 - 0 in the
end.
