The Awakeri 15th grade team continued their good form
in the Rotorua League on Saturday. They got out to a 3 - 0 lead at half time
against John Paul College Jets, but ran away in the second half to win 11 -
0 in the end. Awakeri's good passing skills were more effective than their opposition's
counter attacking. Player of the day Rhys Cram scored a hat-trick from his left
wing position. Lindsey Cotter (3), James Holani (2), Matthew Orr-McKeown (2)
and Gareth Rowlands were the other scorers. Awakeri will have to step it up
a notch this week, as they face top of the table Whakatane.
In the 13th grade, CJ McIndoe Builders Awakeri Dragons had a much more even
game with KTFC than their 8 - 1 loss indicates. Nicholas Baker was player of
the day for a dynamic game in defence. He was well supported by goalkeeper Alex
Albright and Clive McIndoe. Dragons created a lot of chances but will need to
work on their shooting. Samuel Burgess was Dragons' goal scorer.
The Wrangler Awakeri Aces had a tough 13th grade game with Saints, losing 10
- 0. Player of the day Christopher Walker kept up his effort for the entire
game.
AB Contracting Awakeri Jets played very well in their 11th grade premier division
game against Beaver Kitchens Opotiki. Zac Fretwell put in lots of effort and
scored a goal, to be named player of the day. Daniel Reeves, Caleb Carter and
Toby Kirkpatrick also got in on the goals. Joshua Klein Ovink had a sound game
in goal too.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Awakeri Knights met the skilful Saints team.
Despite player of the day Kayla Turvey's efforts, Saints won 5 - 0.
Columbus Cafe Awakeri Bulldogs played Ohope Troopers in the 9th grade. Lucas
Schlepers was Bulldogs player of the day, making some good breaks up front.
Troopers won the game 4 - 0.
Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers had a good tussle with Ohope Surfers in the
8th grade, going down 3 - 4 in the end. Goals were scored by Quest Tipping (2)
and Jaspreet Dharmet. Brayden Phillips was Rangers player of the day.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Mosquitoes used their steadily improving passing
skills to beat Whakatane Panthers 5 - 0. Player of the day Jack du Toit scored
a goal, while Justin Perkins and Sean Young put away two each.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos all played well in their 7th grade game against K Town
Kings. Autos were under-strength and they had to work very hard, eventually
losing 5 - 0. Marshall McGuire's tackling earned him player of the day.
Ohope Wanderers and Eastern Bay Property Maintenance Awakeri Rovers had a robust
exchange in their 7th grade game. Wanderers were rewarded with two fine goals
from one of their skilled front runners. More determination by Rovers in the
second half enabled Jacob Davis to score two well taken goals. Both teams fought
hard for the winning goal, but their efforts were thwarted by brave goalkeeping
from Mikayla Binney-Cox and the Wanderers keeper. The result was a 2 - 2 draw,
with the hard working Lachlan Butler player of the day.
Awakeri T-Rexes had a good win against Ohope Dolphins in the 6th grade. Emily
Julian and Tara van Beekhuizen scored three goals each and Taryn Forbes scored
one. Player of the day Linette Lengkeek played well and gives her best at practices.
Also in the 6th grade, Hi-Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns had lots of players missing
for their game against Kawerau Dragons. The improving Lily du Toit was named
player of the day.
