Sunny weather on Saturday seemed to bring out the goals for
some of Awakeri's soccer teams.
In the 15th grade, Awakeri beat John Paul College Jets 10 - 0. Awakeri started
strongly against JPC with man of the match Lindsey scoring a hat trick before
the half. JPC didn't do themselves any favours with only 10 players and a goalie
with no gloves. Awakeri finished off some good play with 3 more well taken goals
to take the score to 6 nil at half time. JPC had some brief moments of excellence
but an outstanding save by then goalie Matt McKeown denied the home team of
a goal. Awakeri went onto score 4 more in the second half to take the score
to 10. Lindsey Cotter was awarded player of the day for his outstanding efforts
in front of goal and all round play.
CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons had an even 13th grade game with Ohope Waves, the
score being 3 - 3 at half time. Waves ran out of steam in the second half though
and Dragons went on to a 6 - 4 win. Mark Morrison (3), Caleb Sheather (2) and
Alex Albright scored the goals. Shane Gow's strong showing earned him player
of the day. Brylee Bramley, Gemma McKeown and Clive McIndoe all had good games
too.
Also in the 13th grade, The Wrangler Awakeri Aces sportingly played 8 aside
with Opotiki, who only had that number of players. It turned into a very good
game for both sides with a 5 - 5 draw the result. The Aces team performance
meant they all shared player of the day honours. Ari Wilson-Porter scored a
hat-trick and Ash Roozendaal scored the other two.
Zac Fretwell starred for AB Contracting Awakeri Jets in their 11th grade premier
division game with Whakatane Sharks. Fretwell made a lot of good saves in goal,
and, through Sam McPherson and Daniel Reeves, Jets led till a late equaliser
grabbed Sharks a 2 - 2 draw.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Awakeri Knights put in a great team effort to
win 1 - 0 against ESP Whakatane Electrical Spirits. Sam Holani was the match
winner, with a sound game in goal in the first half, and coming out to score
the goal after half time.
Columbus Cafe Awakeri Bulldogs played their last game in the 9th grade, against
Ohope midweek. Ohope won an exciting game 3 - 2. The Bulldogs team worked well
as a unit and shared player of the day.
Also in the 9th grade, Veronica Hall's Awakeri Wildhogs had a tough game against
Matata Xtreme Team. Dylan Hoefsloot scored for Wild hogs and Jared Turvey was
player of the day. Matata won 6 - 1.
Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers put in a good all round performance in their
8th grade game against Ohope. Player of the day Jaspreet Dharmet scored two
goals, with golden boot Quest Tipping the other scorer in a 3 - 1 win for Rangers.
Taylor Harte and Lauren Baxter also had top games.
Understrength Awakeri Mosquitoes had a tough 8th grade game against the very
talented Whakatane Superheroes team. Mosquitoes went down 6 - 1, with Sean Young
scoring Awakeri's only goal. Christian van der Gulik got player of the day for
his courageous efforts in goal.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos played Whakatane Incredibles in the 7th grade. Player
of the day Isaiah Davidson made some good tackles and scored the goal for Autos.
Quinton Wood and Levi Dixon were also in top form. Incredibles won 4 - 1.
Glorious sunshine welcomed Eastern Bay Property Maintenance Awakeri Rovers,
as they ran on to Tarawera Park for their early morning 7th grade fixture against
Kawerau Chiefs. The first half was a hard fought mid-field tussle between equally
matched sides. Twice Chiefs broke the deadlock and ran through to score.
Early in the second half, Jacob Hannan ran through from mid-field. The post
saved the first shot, but Hannan was quick to latch on to the rebound and drove
it home. Rovers began to lift the pace of their game and the pressure told as
Chiefs conceded an own goal. Not to be outdone, Chiefs responded well and scored
their third goal. Determined Rovers again lifted their game and their efforts
were rewarded with a fine goal by player of the day Jacob Davis. Mathew Webb
scored a first class goal to seal a 4 - 3 win to Rovers.
Awakeri T-Rexes all had fun in their 6th grade game against Whakatane Happy
Feet. Emily Julian earned player of the day for her efforts in goal and on the
field. Linette Lengkeek impressed with her enthusiastic play. Whakatane won
3 - 0.
Also in the 6th grade, Hi Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns all got stuck in and
enjoyed their game against Kawerau Crusaders. Crusaders had one star player
who scored quite a few goals for a comfortable win. Player of the day Logan
Calder did well as goalkeeper and out on the field.
