There were quite a few close hard fought games for Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday, in amongst a few heavier losses.
Awakeri's 15th grade team kept up their good start in the Rotorua League with a 1 - 1 draw against Edgecumbe-Kawerau. Awakeri went 1 - 0 up when player of the day James Holani made a great run towards goal and crossed it for Lindsey Cotter who finished strongly. Edgecumbe got a break away, and finished off a good cross to even the scores. In the second half Awakeri won most of the possession but couldn't find the winner, the final score being a 1 - 1 draw.
In the 13th grade The Wrangler Awakeri Aces were beaten 7 - 0 by Whakatane FC, despite another good showing from keeper Rory MacGregor. Carrie Fynn's strong defence earned her player of the day.
An entertaining 11th grade premier game saw AB Contracting Awakeri Jets beat K-Town 2 - 0. Sam McPherson's attacking skills had him player of the day and Caleb Cater and Toby Kirkpatrick scored the goals.
Awakeri Knights came up against a very good Te Teko team in the 11th grade 1st division. Daniel Gow's efforts at both ends of the pitch saw him named player of the day, but no-one could emulate Kayla Turvey's goal scoring form of the week before. Te Teko won 6 - 0.
Both Awakeri's 9th grade premier teams had tough opponents. Columbus Cafe Bulldogs were beaten 8 - 0 by the strong Whakatane Iti Ma side, with Ashleigh Dixon player of the day. Veronica Hall's Wildhogs lost to Opotiki by the same score with Dylan Hoefsloot player of the day. Nicole Theobald also did well in goal.
Quest Tipping scored twice in a player of the day performance to help Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers to a 2 - 2 draw with Whakatane Rogues in the 8th grade.
Awakeri 8th grade Mosquitoes had a great game against James St Aces. It was a very entertaining game, which ended in a 0-0 draw. Mosquitoes' player of the day went to Christian Vander Gulik. Jack Du Toit and Danyon Arrol also played very well.
In the 7th grade, Whakatane Tornadoes got a couple of break aways to grab a 4 - 1 win against Da Silva Awakeri Autos. Quinton Wood's positional play saw him named player of the day for Autos, while Shannon Frost was the goal scorer.
Pit Stop Opotiki got into their 7th grade game against Eastern Bay Property Maintenance Awakeri Rovers quickly and had a 2 - 0 lead at half time. However more commitment and two fine goals from Jacob Davis earned a 2 - 2 draw. Ruby Murphy was player of the day with some good tackles in defence.
Two Awakeri teams enjoyed playing each other in the 6th grade. The experienced Awakeri T-Rexes eventually beat Hi-Way Tyres Young Guns 1 - 0. Kaleb Muggeridge was Young Guns' player of the day, while Tara Van Beekhuizen, who took the ball forward well, was T-Rexes'.
Awakeri Rascals lost their 6th grade game to Whakatane Happy Feet. Rascals had no subs to call on, but Liam McCormick worked hard and was named player of the day.
