Miserable weather did not prevent most of Awakeri's soccer teams having some exciting games on Saturday.
Awakeri travelled to a cold Rotorua to face JPC Titans in the 15th grade. Awakeri got off to a quick start putting away a few early goals. At half time, the score was 5 - 0. JPC managed to score, but Awakeri fought back straight away with some more well taken goals. The end score, Awakeri 12, JPC Titans 1. Player of the day Pete Dowden had an excellent game in the midfield and scored two well taken goals. Other scorers were Lindsey Cotter (2), Matt Reeves (2), Rhys Cram (2), Chris Johnston (2), Oliver Butler and Madison Constantine.
Awakeri's two 13th grade teams had an exciting match with each other. The Wrangler Awakeri Aces started out with a few holiday jitters, but settled into the game with Chris Walker giving them the lead. CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons battled bravely with only nine players. Goalkeeper Alex Albright did his job well, and then he pushed up into the forwards in the second half and scored an equaliser. Right on the final whistle, Aces' player of the day Ash Roozendaal scored the winner for a 2 - 1 score. Dragons' player of the day was defender Clive McIndoe.
In the 11th grade premier division, AB Contracting Awakeri Jets had a very close tussle with K-Town. Brooke Theobald was player of the day for Jets. Tiaan Brownless and Daniel Reeves scored for Jets, but K-Town got a late winner to take the game 3 - 2.
Awakeri Knights had no subs for their 11th grade 1st division game against MCE Whakatane Firebirds. They eventually ran out of puff in the very cold conditions, losing 4 - 0. Knights' player of the day James Thompson worked hard up front and came close to scoring several times.
Veronica Hall's Awakeri Wildhogs did well in their 9th grade games against Cox Forestry Opotiki. Wildhogs put together an excellent second half to keep their strong opponents on their toes. Player of the day Samantha Looney closed the Opotiki attackers down well, while Greer Hartigan cleared the ball out well. Jared Turvey scored for Wildhogs. Opotiki won 5 - 1.
Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers had a good 8th grade game with Kawerau Kraze 8s. Georgia Robinson-Kearns made some good saves in goal and was named player of the day. Quest Tipping scored, but Kawerau took the game 3 - 1.
The Awakeri 8th grade Mosquitoes, Kawerau Kickers and the supporters braved a very cool early morning game. Kawerau put on the heat but Awakeri failed to fire in the Arctic like conditions. Kawerau scored two goals and Awakeri's goal was scored by Sean Young. Player of the day Justin Perkins and Hayley Calder both had strong games.
In the 7th grade, Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a good spirited, exciting game with Ohope Pirates. Levi Dixon scored for Autos and was named player of the day. Shannon Frost did very well in her turn in goal.
Hi-Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns lost their 6th grade game with K Town Krickets, but they had fun anyway. Their player of the day was Emma Hannan.
