Exciting close games in the 7th and 8th grades was the highlight for
Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday.
Da Silva Awakeri Autos put in a solid 7th grade display against Ohope Wanderers.
Player of the day Korben Wilson got off his line well as goalkeeper, making
some good saves. Isaiah Davidson combined well with goal scorer Quinton Wood.
Shannon Frost made good ground with intelligent throw-ins. Autos won 2 - 0.
Early pressure from Eastern Bay Property Maintenance Awakeri Rovers resulted
in an own goal by Whakatane Tornadoes in their 7th grade game. Rovers maintained
their early advantage and Mathew Webb pushed the ball into the net for Rovers
second goal.
The tide turned in the second half and Rovers were under pressure. Tornadoes
took advantage and scored two good goals. Jacob Davis had to retire hurt: the
change further unsettled Rovers and Tornadoes scored their third to give them
a well deserved 3 - 2 win.
Player of the day was Mikayla Binney-Cox, for her competent and enthusiastic
goal keeping and her tireless running and tackling in the second half.
In the 8th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers had a good battle with James
Street Aces, securing a 1 - 1 draw. Jaspreet Dharmet was named player of the
day for his non-stop effort.
Awakeri Mosquitoes 8th Grade team played an entertaining and enjoyable game
against the James Street Legends. The game was played at a fast pace with Awakeri
coming out on top 2 - 0. Excellent team play earned Keely Forbes player of the
day. Sean Young and Danyon Arrol also both played well.
Columbus Cafe Awakeri Bulldogs had a fast paced 9th grade game at Cox Forestry
Opotiki. Bulldogs played well, but were unfortunate to lose goalkeeper Joey
Flanagan with a broken arm. Player of the day Aaron Fretwell covered well in
defence. Opotiki won 4 - 0.
Also in the 9th grade, Veronica Hall's Awakeri Wildhogs had a good tussle with
Allandale. Player of the day Kodi Bramley was strong in defence. Allandale eventually
won 3 - 0.
Two goals in the last few minutes gave Whakatane Phoenix a 2 - 0 win against
AB Contracting Awakeri Jets in the 11th grade premier division. Brooke Theobald's
developing skills had her named player of the day for Jets, in what was a good
team effort.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Awakeri Knights had more of the possession,
but couldn't make it count, losing to Otakiri Falcons 2 - 1 in a very good game.
Sam Holani made some good saves in goal, to be named player of the day. Kayla
Turvey continued her goal scoring form, netting the Knights goal.
The Wrangler Awakeri Aces had a good first half in their 13th grade game against
Ohope Storm. Good teamwork and defence kept Ohope to a 1 - 0 lead, but in the
second half Ohope ran away to win 7 - 0. Renko Barkema turned in a player of
the day performance at centre back for Aces, ably supported by Brittany Harder
and Carrie Fynn. Rory MacGregor was excellent again in goal.
Also in the 13th grade, CJ McIndoe Builders Awakeri Dragons played Saints. Despite
the best efforts of player of the day Caleb Sheather, Nicholas Baker and Aroha
Ridley, Saints had a comfortable win.
In the 6th grade, Hi-Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns played well against Whakatane
Happy Feet. The score was even at half time, but Happy Feet went on to win 3
- 0. Monique Ruiter was Awakeri's player of the day.
Awakeri T-Rexes are starting to show some individual skills, although Whakatane
Transformers beat them 4 - 0 in the 6th grade. Taryn Forbes was named player
of the day for getting stuck in.
