Three hat-tricks from Awakeri players brought good results for their teams in Saturday's soccer.
Monique Ruiter scored Hi-Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns' first goal all season, in their 6th grade game against Ohope Dolphins. Having got a taste of it, she went on to score two more, earning player of the day and a 3 - 2 win. It was an excellent team performance and was based on solid defence.
Awakeri T-Rex played Ohope Orcas in bitter conditions in the 6th grade. Awakeri dominated the first half, but Ohope came back in the second half to grab a 1 - 1 draw. Tara Van Beekhuizen had a great game in defence for T-Rex and Emily Julian was the goal scorer. Taryn Forbes and Linette Lengkeek tried hard all day, player of the day was Zoe Bennett.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Rascals tried hard to contend with Allandale Wasps' star player. Sari Pawson was Rascals' player of the day, but Wasps were too strong.
Eastern Bay Property Maintenance Awakeri Rovers had their first win of the season, beating Ohope Buccaneers 1 - 0 in the 7th grade. Player of the day Cody Baker-Bragg scored the goal, and all the team put it together well.
It was end to end excitement in Da Silva Awakeri Autos 7th grade game with Allandale Force. Kayla Musgrave tackled well and was named player of the day. Kyla McGuire had a good game as goalie, while Isaiah Davidson and Quinton Wood were also in top form. Force won the game 4 - 2.
Awakeri 8th grade Mosquitoes had a 4 - 4 draw against a very tough Kawerau Kraze 8's team. An outstanding four goals by striker Sean Young saw him get player of the day. Sophia and Christian Van der Gulik stepped in and defended strongly in the goal throughout the game.
Also in the 8th grade, a Quest Tipping hat-trick saw Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers beat Allandale Rockets 3 - 1. Georgia Robinson-Kearns and Jayden Hoefsloot were solid in their turns in goal, keeping the Rockets at bay.
In the 11th grade premier division, AB Contracting Awakeri Jets turned on a very good team performance against Whakatane Gunners, with Caleb Robertshaw named player of the day. Lots of attacks in the second half brought a Zac Fretwell goal, but Gunners held on to win 2 -1.
Awakeri Knights put together some excellent team play, but conceded an unlucky goal to lose their 11th grade 1st division match with Ohope Phantoms 1 - 0. An outstanding performance by Daniel Gow, in defence, had him named player of the day.
In the 13th grade, the defenders did well for CJ McIndoe Awakeri Dragons against Allandale Phoenix, but it wasn't quite enough, with Phoenix winning 2 - 0. Cross country champion Samuel Burgess covered huge amounts of territory in a player of the day performance for Dragons. Others to shine were defenders Brylee Bramlee and Gemma McKeown and keeper Alex Albright.
