September 6th 2008
It was the last games of the season for quite
a few of Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday.
Awakeri travelled to face Rotorua United Girls in the 15th grade. Awakeri got
off to a flyer when they found themselves 2 - 0 up in under five minutes. Awakeri
found the net three more times before the half time break, one of those being
an unlucky own goal after Lindsey Cotter hit the post with a super strike. The
halftime score was 5 - 0. Rotorua Girls were unlucky not to score, when a high
flying shot caught the Awakeri goalie well off his line, but it went wide. Awakeri
went on to win 12 - 0. James Holani (3), Madison Constantine (2), Matt Richmond
(2), Gareth Rowlands (2), Matt McKeown, and Chris Johnston were the scorers.
The Wrangler Awakeri Aces had a good first half against Ohope Waves in the 13th
grade, but they couldn't maintain it, going down eventually 3 - 0. Dean Frost's
solid work in defence earned him player of the day.
Awakeri Knights were short of players for their 11th grade 1st division game
with Opotiki. They all performed well, led by player of the day Alec Hunt who
shone in defence. Opotiki won 3 - 0.
Awakeri Mosquitoes ended their 8th grade season on a high note, with a 5 - 1
win against Thornton Reds. Mosquitoes goal scorers were: Sean Young (3), Justin
Perkins and Jack Du Toit. Their player of the day was to Haley Calder, who had
a good all round game.
Also in the 8th grade, Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers pushed the strong Whakatane
Superheroes team. Whakatane got some late goals to grab a 5 - 0 win, but Rangers
made them work hard for it. Quest Tipping was the Awakeri player of the day.
Eastern Bay Property Maintenance Awakeri Rovers travelled to Allandale for their
final 7th grade game of the season. The fast running Allandale side took the
game to Rovers from the start, scoring two fine goals mid-way through the first
half. Rovers were playing some of their best soccer of the season, but failed
to put the ball in the net.
Rovers continued to play good soccer in the second half but again failed to
capitalize in front of the Allandale goal. Against the run of play, Allandale
scored a good late goal to secure a 3 - 0 win. Mikayla Binney Cox's hard work
in attack and defence saw her named player of the day.
Also in the 7th grade, Da Silva Awakeri Autos had a very good outing against
Ohope Buccaneers. Goals to Isaiah Davidson (2) and player of the day Quinton
Wood gave them a 3 - 1 win.
Awakeri Rascals impressed their coach Richard Mahy by spreading out and passing
the ball in their last 6th grade game, against Ohope Dolphins. Player of the
day Sarah Sheaff and Anika Schlepers were both in top form as Rascals put together
a 4 - 1 win.
Hi-Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns had a great last game in the 6th grade, against
Allandale. They all got stuck in and had some good attacks.
Three grades still have some football to play in the coming weeks, but all teams
will look forward to the club break-up on September 27th.
