Continuing good form from Awakeri's 15th grade team in
the Rotorua League, and some top goalkeeping in a number of age levels were
the highlights from Saturday's games.
Awakeri had just enough players to field a team at Ngongotaha in the 15th grade.
Lindsey Cotter was first to get on the score sheet with a well taken goal to
take Awakeri into the lead. Ngongotaha took advantage of the wind with some
big kicks down the field causing a few issues for the Awakeri back line, who
cleaned up any balls that came through and made some crucial tackles. An unfortunate
handball by a Ngongotaha player in his own penalty box led to a very well struck
penalty by Gareth Rowlands into the bottom left hand corner. James Holani scored
twice to secure a good win. The result Awakeri 4, Ngongotaha 0. Harry Cotter
was player of the day for his work in defence.
In the 13th grade, The Wrangler Awakeri Aces showed improving team work and
grabbed their first win, 4 - 1 against Opotiki. Ari Wilson-Porter scored twice,
with Renko Barkema and Jarrod Butler also adding goals. Excellent defence earned
Brittany Harder player of the day, and, as usual, keeper Rory MacGregor was
hard to get past.
A poor first half from CJ McIndoe Builders Awakeri Dragons gave Ohope Waves
a six goal start in their 13th grade game. However, much better positional play
helped share the second half honours, with the final score 8 - 2. Goalkeeper
Alex Albright was named player of the day after some great saves. He was assisted
by Clive McIndoe in defence, while Caleb Sheather and Mark Morrison were the
scorers.
Awakeri Knights played well in their 11th grade game against Opotiki, but couldn't
score. Dillon Murray's good defence had him named player of the day. Opotiki
won the game 2 - 0.
Veronica Hall's Awakeri Wildhogs had a strong second half, getting to the ball
first, but Ohope Troopers won the 9th grade game 3 - 0. Greer Hartigan earned
player of the day by spreading her passes out wide to bring those players into
the game.
Also in the 9th grade, Columbus Cafe Awakeri Bulldogs started showing some good
communication in their game against Allandale Hurricanes. Player of the day
Tom Holani was tireless in defence. Allandale won 4 - 0.
In the 8th grade Performance Zone Awakeri Rangers did well against James Street
Legends. Player of the day Jayden Hoefsloot was excellent on attack and in defence.
Quest Tipping (2), Jaspreet Dharmet and Taylor Harte scored the goals to claim
a 4 - 0 win.
Awakeri Mosquitoes and Ohope Surfers had a good battle in their 8th grade game.
Player of the day Sean Young had a good all round game and put away two goals.
Jack du Toit did well in goal to help keep out the well performed Surfers team.
Further goals to Jamie Findlay (2) and Christian Van der Gulik gave Mosquitoes
an exciting 5 - 3 win.
Matata scored a goal right from the kick-off against da Silva Awakeri Autos
in their 7th grade game. The two teams had a good even battle with Autos unlucky
not to equalise. Kayla Musgrave's hard tackling brought her player of the day.
Isaiah Davidson's passing and Marshall McGuire's goalkeeping were other features.
Matata won 3 - 0 in the end.
Also in the 7th grade, the talented Incredibles Whakatane put Eastern Bay Property
Maintenance Awakeri Rovers under pressure from the start. Mathew Webb played
well in goal and Rovers were unfortunate to concede a goal, just before half-time.
Rovers were much brighter at the start of the second half, and their efforts
were rewarded when player of the day Jacob Davis latched on to a ball and quickly
slotted it home. A last minute free kick was well put away by Incredibles. The
spectacular shot did not give goalkeeper Mikayla Binney-Cox a chance. The final
score Rovers 1, Incredibles 2.
Awakeri T-Rexes played at Te Teko in the 6th grade. Their player of the day
was Maania Roia. All T-Rexes players are improving and having a lot of fun being
part of the team.
The improving Awakeri Rascals had a 0 - 0 draw with Matata Dynamoes in the 6th
grade. Player of the day Rhylee Mahy did well as goalkeeper. Diadre Herrick
had a good game too and Chanel Crawley-Anderson played strongly as usual.
Hi-Way Tyres Awakeri Young Guns played well against a good Whakatane Transformers
team in the 6th grade. Once again, their keeper, Shayna Penberth, was player
of the day. Transformers won 4 - 0.
