Awakeri's soccer teams are making good progress in their play,
as the season moves into its third week.
In the 11th grade premiers, Matata Transfield Xtreme Team beat Energyscan Awakeri
Wildhogs 4 - 0. Awakeri were unlucky, however, not to profit from the good passing
and pressure that they applied. Player of the day Sam Middleton hit the post
twice, and the Matata keeper made a good save to deny Tio Geerlings. Shane Hope
produced a brave display in defence.
Janice Hendl & Associates Awakeri Hawks beat Whakatane Kahawais 1 - 0 in
the 11th grade 1st division. Ethan Vincent worked hard, and scored with a good
shot, to earn player of the day. Tyrin Penberth made some good saves in goal
to keep Whakatane out.
There was little joy in the 9th grade premiers. Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks
went down to Ohope 4 - 0, with Reece Hendl-Cox player of the day. Awakeri Mosquitoes
were taught a lesson in positional play by the very good Kawerau team, going
down 5 nil. Credit must be given to the Mosquitoes who never gave up and just
missed scoring on several occasions. Sean Young played well with some good strikes
at goal while Keely Forbes and Monique Perkins defended strongly. Player of
the day went to Sam Cook for his efforts in goal.
Da Silva Awakeri Dragons had a strong start against Te Teko in the 8th grade
premiers. Dragons were ahead 2 - 0 at half time, but Te Teko came back and it
took a late goal from Dragons' player of the day Jacob Davis to seal the 3 -
2 win. Davis scored twice, and Isaiah Davidson did well to shake off his marker
and score too. Ngaio Wilson did well marking her opposites.
Awakeri Aces are learning quickly in the 8th grade 1st division. Aces lost to
Kawerau 1 - 0, but showed some good positioning as the game went on. Tommy Rosewarne
was their player of the day.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Incredibles continued their good start to the season
with a 4 - 2 win against Saints. Player of the day Marshall McGuire and Liam
McCormick both scored twice.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets came up against a strong Ohope 7th grade team.
Midgets battled away, but were well beaten. Cody Howson had a strong game for
the Awakeri side.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Warriors lost 3 - 1 to Saints. Lilly du Toit scored
the goal with a good run away. The girls and the goalies shone for Warriors.
The Awakeri Fliers lost 1 - 0 to Edgecumbe in their 6th grade game. Fliers came
close to getting their first goal. Keaton Turvey made some good runs and was
named player of the day.
In the junior girl's league, Columbus Cafe Awakeri Angels had a good game with
Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rex. For the Angels, Alex Robbie made some good
saves in goal to be player of the day. Nicole Webb and Sadie van Beekhuizen
also did well. Emily Julian scored three goals for T-Rex. Jenae Brownless got
one and Taryn Forbes got her first ever goal ever. Player of the day Monique
Ruiter and Tara Van Beekhuizen showed good sportsmanship by volunteering to
play for the younger Angels team.
