The first win of the season for their youngest team was the
highlight for the Awakeri Soccer Club on Saturday.
Awakeri Angels played well in their junior girls' league game. They continually
put pressure on the Thornton defence, especially through the efforts of Nicole
Webb and Juliet Findlay. Sadie Van Beekhuizen finally scored the goal that gave
the Angels their first win of the season. Taylor Skipps was named player of
the day for the pressure she put on the Thornton attack. Angels won 1 - 0.
Awakeri Warriors played Whakatane Transformers in the 6th grade. Warriors had
a good second half, and defended well. Even though Transformers won comfortably,
it was an exciting game. Emma Hannan's defence and attacking skills saw her
named player of the day.
In the 7th grade, HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets lost to Whakatane Happy Feet.
Player of the day Cody Howson was injured twice, but bravely played on. Tylar
Hall did well in his turn in goal, and Caleb Keightley did well on attack.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons had a hard 8th grade premier game against Ohope
Thistle. Dragons had an improved second half and launched some good attacks.
Korben Wilson did well in his turn in goal and out on the field. Isaiah Davidson's
passing down the line was a feature of his play and he was named player of the
day. Ohope won 6 - 0.
In the 8th grade 1st division, Awakeri Aces had a very even battle with Whakatane
Tigers. Aces were unable to finish off their chances, with only Brock Dewar
finding the goal. Player of the day Liam Hutchinson worked hard all game and
made some good tackles. The score was 3 - 1 to Tigers.
Awakeri 9th grade Mosquitoes played Whakatane Super Heroes.
Although the Mosquitoes played very well, Whakatane won the game 5 - 0. Player
of the day went to Keely Forbes. Shannon Frost played very well too.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Janice Hendl and Associates Awakeri Hawks worked
hard to defend their goal against Ohope. Ohope got a couple of good goals and
Joshua Keightley scored an impressive goal for the Hawks, with a huge boot from
20 metres out. Vincent Salmon earned player of the day for an awesome game in
defence. Tyson Turnbull also had a good game, keeping the pressure on the other
team. The score was 1 - 2 to Ohope.
Energyscan Awakeri Wildhogs and Ohope Assault kept the pressure on each other
in their 11th grade premier clash. Dillon Murray worked hard throughout the
game and was named player of the day. Sam Middleton was the scorer for Wildhogs
in what turned out to be a 1 - 1 draw.
