The first wins of the season for two teams, and one player hitting the post four times were the highlights for the Awakeri Soccer Club on Saturday.
In the 7th grade HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets did very well against Ohope United, notching up their first win. Cody Howson and Tylar Hall both played tremendous games, supporting player of the day Caleb Marshall. Howson, Hall and Ryan Magee scored goals to grab a 3 - 1 win for Midgets.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Incredibles are starting to show some teamwork in their play. Ryan Mapu earned player of the day with an excellent showing in goal against Ohope Dynamites. Marshall McGuire scored for Awakeri, but Ohope won the game 3 - 1.
Awakeri Fliers enjoyed scoring two goals in their 6th grade game against Ohope All Stars. Campbell Forsyth's determination saw him named player of the day. Ezra Young and Cambell Julian were the Fliers' scorers in a 2 - 5 loss.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Warriors and Matata had an even game, although Matata took it out 5 - 0. Kaleb Muggeridge covered the ground well and put up some strong kicks to be named player of the day. Logan Calder played well in goal too.
In the junior girls league Awakeri Angels tried hard all game but Te Teko Piwaiwaka were too strong. Nicole Webb got player of the day for her goalkeeping and her hard work on the field.
Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rexes had a tough game against Opotiki in the junior girls league. Opotiki scored a goal early on, then T-Rexes dominated possession with countless attacking moves, only to be denied by a tenacious Opotiki goalie. Taryn Forbes finally got one past the keeper, earning player of the day. Emily Julian was unlucky to have four shots hit the post. Jenae Brownless was tireless in running back and stopping any counter attacks. The result was a 1 - 1 draw.
Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars had their best result of the season with a convincing win against Edgecumbe in the 13th grade. Avatars played as a team with some good passing. Zac Fretwell's terrier like efforts had him named player of the day. Chris Walker was excellent in defence. Goals were scored by Sam McPherson, Josh Klein Ovink, Fretwell, Walker, Jesse Ingle and Matthew Eveleens in a 10 - 1 win to Avatars.
In the 11th grade 1st division Janice Hendl & Associates Awakeri Hawks played an awesome game against Saints Professionals. Hawks tried a few different positions, working hard, but never had any chances to make a good break. Kylie Hendl-Cox earned player of the day for her strong defence. Vincent Salmon and Ethan Vincent also had good games with some strong tackling and accurate passing. Saints eventually won the game 5 - 0.
Awakeri Mosquitoes played Te Teko Makos in the 9th grade premier division. The game could have gone either way. Mosquitoes lost 1 - 2. Their player of the day was Justin Perkins. Shannon Frost also had a fantastic game.
Also in the 9th grade premier division, Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks were short of numbers, and got soundly beaten by Saints All Blues.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons had a tough first half against Whakatane Incredibles in the 8th grade premier division. However, they managed to draw the second half 2 - 2, with both goals scored by player of the day Cody Bragg, who ran himself ragged. Jacob Davis worked tirelessly in defence. Incredibles took the game 8 - 2.
In the 8th grade 1st division Awakeri Aces had their best team work of the season against a strong Allandale City team. Brock Dewar was named player of the day for his hundred per cent effort and for sticking to the game plan. Allandale won 6 - 0.
