Team work paved the way for a good win for the Awakeri Soccer Club's oldest team on Saturday. Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars were away to Whakatane Devils in the 13th grade, and really played for each other. Player of the day Jesse Ingle won a lot of ball with some good challenges. Zac Fretwell turned the possession into goals, scoring five times, with Daniel Reeves adding one more. Avatars won 6 - 2.
In the 11th grade, Janice Hendl & Associates Awakeri Hawks had a close game against the Allandale Gunners. Aaron Fretwell earned player of the day for his awesome ball skills. He managed to zip around the other players and set his brother Tom Fretwell up for an excellent goal. Unfortunately Allandale were awarded a penalty two minutes before the end and won the game 2 - 1.
Awakeri's two 9th grade premier teams met in another great tight contest. Both teams - Awakeri Mosquitoes and Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks had a lot of support on the sideline, with Sharks taking the honours this time, 2 - 0. Quest Tipping was the goal scorer. Everyone played well, especially Taylor Harte, Reece Hendl-Cox and Oliver Thompson in defence. Players of the day Elana Spod and Petri Rautenbach never stopped running.
In the 8th grade 1st division Awakeri Aces lost 3 - 0 to Whakatane Tigers, with Emma Paine player of the day.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets played Saints Rebels in the 7th grade. Caleb Marshall was player of the day for his hard work. Rylee Looney and Tylar Hall combined well on attack too. Saints won the game 4 - 0.
In the 6th grade Awakeri Warriors played very well against Allandale Rangers. Player of the day Lilly Du Toit made lots os good runs and scored a goal. Zalea Tipping and Emma Hannan also scored, to grab a 3 - 0 win for Warriors.
Awakeri Fliers worked hard in their 6th grade game, against Saints Crusaders. They had a solid first half but ran out of steam in the second half, with Saints winning. Cambell Julian was player of the day for Fliers.
In the Junior Girls League Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri Wild Cats played well against Thornton Reds, with some excellent passing and positional play by all the Wild Cats. Their player of the day was Shana Penberth. The accuracy and power in the shooting for goal was a highlight.
The Columbus Cafe Awakeri Angels tried hard but were outclassed by the Opotiki Ringoes in the Junior Girls League. Alex Robbie tried hard in defence, with help from Danielle Ruiter. Kate Gow tried hard in goal first half followed by Nicole Webb in second half and was named player of the day.
