Two of their youngest teams saved Awakeri Soccer
from recording all losses on Saturday!
In the junior girl's league, Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rexes beat Thornton
Reds. Renske Brabant showed natural striking talent, and earned player of the
day. Emily Julian, Tara van Beekhuizen and Zoe Bennett scored, but the team
looking to pass the ball was a pleasing aspect for their coach.
Awakeri Angels lost to Opotiki Ringoes in the junior girls, but are improving
week by week. Angels came close to getting their first goal through Sadie Van
Beekhuizen, with some help from Nicole Webb and Juliet Findlay. Player of the
day went to Danielle Ruiter who played her best game so far this season and
made some good saves in goal. It was a good team effort by the Angels.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Warriors met Ohope Mustangs in a good game. The Warriors
all got stuck in, with Emma Hannan scoring to secure a 1 - 1 draw. Jack Young
was named player of the day for his good goalkeeping and his steady improvement.
Player of the day Ezra Young scored the first goal of the season for Awakeri
Fliers in their 6th grade game against Thornton. Fliers are enjoying each game
and growing in confidence with it.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Incredibles had a slow first half against Sportsworld
Opotiki. They got back into the game, with player of the day Gene Brown working
hard as a good example. Opotiki won 3 - 0.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets lost to Beaver Kitchens Opotiki 2 - 0, also in
the 7th grade. Matthys Wessells' strong clearances earned him player of the
day.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons put in lots of effort against a well organised
Ohope Thistle team in the 8th grade premier division. In his last game for Dragons,
Quinton Wood was named player of the day for his strong tackles. His contributions
will be missed by the Dragons team. Ruby Murphy was another to do well in the
4 - 0 loss.
In the 8th grade 1st division, Awakeri Aces were beaten 4 - 0 by the more structured
Saints team. Emma Paine's good efforts in goal and on the field saw her named
player of the day.
Awakeri 9th grade Mosquitoes had a great game against the Whakatane Magpies.
The score was tied up at one all for most of the game, but late in the second
half the Magpies scored two very good goals to take the win 3 - 1. Mosquitoes
player of the day went to midfielder Monique Perkins for a good all round game.
Also in the 9th grade premier division, Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks played
their best game yet, despite going down 3 - 0 to the strong Whakatane Superheroes
team. Sharks are starting to put together some good team work and made Whakatane
work for their win. Oliver Thompson earned player of the day with some excellent
work in goal and in the defence. Fellow defenders Reece Hendl-Cox and Taylor
Harte also shone.
In the 11th grade premier division, Energyscan Awakeri Wildhogs put in an outstanding
team effort against the powerful Whakatane Iti Ma team. Lucas Schlepers was
outstanding in goal and his player of the day award was well deserved. Whakatane
won 1 - 0.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Janice Hendl Awakeri Hawks had a hard game against
Kawerau, losing 2 - 0. Tyrin Penberth put in his best effort in the forwards
which earnt him player of the day. Mekaela Learmond and Kylie Hendl-Cox also
had excellent games with some strong tackles and big kicks.
In the 13th grade, Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars were beaten by the strong
Ohope side. Carrie Fynn showed strength throughout the game in defence and was
named player of the day. Caleb Robertshaw set a good example to his team mates
with his non-stop work rate. He also scored a fine solo goal. Ohope won the
game 8 - 1.
