Awakeri's soccer teams had some good hard games on Saturday.
In the 13th grade, Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars started well against the strong Opotiki Magpies line-up. Player of the day Sam McPherson, opened the scoring, showing some good control. Opotiki fought back late in the half and then went on to win 9 - 1 in the end.
Energyscan Awakeri Wildhogs played very good football in the first half against Te Teko Tuna in the 11th grade premier division, holding them to 0 - 0 at half time. Te Teko eventually won 4 - 0. Ethan Brabant impressed with his working on the wing, he provided some good balls in for the midfield to earn player of the day.
In the 11th grade 1st division Janice Hendl and Associates Awakeri Hawks had a good game against Kawerau, losing 3 - 1. Samantha Looney earned player of the day with some awesome defence and good passing which helped Christian Mattock-Prince score the goal. Kara Sanson also put in an extraordinary effort with her accurate passing and attacking.
Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks had a very close game with Whakatane Tricky Chicks in the 9th grade premier division, losing 1 - 0. The Sharks played well. Players of the day Johannes Wessells and Petri Rautenbach have shown big improvement, and deserved their reward.
Also in the 9th grade, Awakeri Mosquitoes weren't at their best, going down 8 - 0 to Saints All Blues. Jack Du Toit never gave up and was player of the day.
Awakeri Incredibles put in a good team effort in their 7th grade game against James Street Stars. Kyla McGuire was player of the day, and her brother Marshall scored the goal to grab a 1 - 1 draw.
An early 7th grade game didn't suit HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets, when they played Saints. Rylee Looney bravely played on with an injury and was named player of the day. Matthys Wessells impressed with his good defending. Saints won the game 4 - 0.
In the 6th grade Awakeri Fliers had fun playing against Whakatane Strikers. Fliers came close to scoring several times and Katie Growden was player of the day.
Awakeri Warriors had an interesting 6th grade game with Paroa, lending them a player to even things up. Player of the day Logan Calder had a good all round game.
In the junior girls' league Columbus Cafe Awakeri Angels played Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rex. The younger Angels team played really well, and never gave up. Their player of the day went to Juliet Findlay for playing tackling really well.
