Players improving seemed to be the theme of the day for Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday. Although some age groups did not have games scheduled, seven Awakeri teams were in action.
Awakeri Warriors had a good sixth grade game with James Street Aces, winning 1 - 0. Emma Hannan was the scorer for Warriors. The much improved Codi Laurent was named player of the day.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Incredibles beat Saints 2 - 1. Ben White has improved lots this season, and he was player of the day. Ryan Mapu and Liam McCormick scored the goals for Incredibles.
The HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets had a good 7th grade game with Allandale Rovers. Rovers won the game 2 - 1. Caleb Keightley's good work in defence had him named player of the day. Tylar Hall scored the goal for the Midgets.
In the junior girls Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rexes played well against Te Teko Piwaiwaka. The T-Rexes had lots of shots at goal. Taryn Forbes played well on defence and scored their only goal. The player of the day award went to Shayna Penberth, for her attacking efforts in the first half and her goal keeping in the second .The final score was a 1 - 1 draw.
In the 9th grade premier division, Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks scored the first goal and had most of pressure against Cookson Forbes Opotiki, but couldn't score the goals. The score was 1 - 1 at halftime. Opotiki scored four late goals from long range and made the score not a very accurate reflection of the game. There were strong games from all the Sharks, with Quest Tipping named player of the day. Caleb Turnbull scored for Sharks. The final score was 5 - 1 to Opotiki.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Janice Hendl & Associates Awakeri Hawks had a good game against Cox Forestry Opotiki, despite losing 5 - 1. Hawks worked hard and Briar Walker scored a well deserved goal. Mekaela Learmond earned player of the day for good ball control. Liam Wilkinson also had an excellent game in defence.
