The joy of playing in muddy conditions and a first win of the
season for the 9th grade Awakeri Sharks team were the highlights of Saturday's
soccer for the Awakeri club.
Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks had a good game with Otakiri Raiders, with plenty
of scoring opportunities created. Sharks were thrilled to get a 3 - 0 win. The
goal scorers were Quest Tipping (2) and Caleb Turnbull. The player of the day
was Taylor Harte, who ran all game, covering the field.
Also in the 9th grade premier division, Awakeri Mosquitoes played Ohope Surfers
in a very evenly matched game. Sean Young scored the goal for the Mosquitoes
and was named player of the day. The final score was 2 - 1 to the Surfers. Jack
Du Toit and Keeley Forbes also played very well for Mosquitoes.
In the 11th grade premier division, Energyscan Awakeri Wildhogs were unlucky
to lose 1 - 0 to Matata. Jared Turvey had an outstanding game, keeping his position
very well. He gave several brilliant passes from the wing and lots of crosses
from the top corner. Marc Anderson got player of the day, with a dynamic performance
in midfield. Joshua Powley read the game well in his first ever time in defence.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Janice Hendl Associates Awakeri Hawks had an
awesome game against Allandale Gunners, grabbing a 2 - 1 win. Joshua Keightley
earned player of the day with some excellent saves in goal. Kara Sanson and
Tyrin Penberth also had good games with their tackling and passing skills shining.
Christian Mattock-Prince and Tom Fretwell were the scorers.
Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rexes had a fun day at Thornton winning 1 -
0 in the junior girls' grade. Emily Julian scored the goal and played well setting
up attacks and doing lots of work on defence. The player of the day was Tara
van Beekhuizen, who actually volunteered to play for the other team. She was
tireless in stopping T-Rexes attacking moves and had plenty of her own bursts
up the field with all her team mates in hot pursuit!
Columbus Cafe Awakeri Angels played well in their junior girls' game against
Opotiki Ringoes. Nicole Webb and Sadie Van Beekhuizen had some good runs up
field. Lucy Webb got player of the day for playing well and never giving up.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Warriors had a good muddy battle with Otakiri Hawks.
Lilly Du Toit scored the goal for the Warriors, and Noah Robinson was player
of the day.
Awakeri Fliers had an end to end 6th grade game with Allandale Rangers in the
mud. Matthew Reihana-Asquith was player of the day for the Fliers. Ezra Young
scored twice and the team came close several more times. Allandale won the game
5 - 2.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets enjoyed their game in the mud with Otakiri Pukekos
in the 7th grade. Great work in his half games in goal and on attack earned
Ryan Magee player of the day. The Midgets defence all played hard in what turned
out to be a 3 - 0 loss.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Incredibles met a solid James Street Legends
team. The Incredibles team shared player of the day honours for all battling
on despite a lot of sickness. Both teams tried to avoid the mudhole! James Street
won 5 - 0.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons had a hard fought battle with Saints Volcanoes
in the 8th grade premier division. Saints led 2 - 1 at half time, and went on
to win 4 - 1. Ruby Murphy's good positional play and tackling saw her named
player of the day. Isaiah Davidson had a high work rate in the midfield and
Cody Baker Bragg scored a good goal on the break.
In the 8th grade 1st division Awakeri Aces lost 1 - 0 to Ohope Pirates. Anika
Schlepers was Aces' player of the day.
