The Awakeri Soccer Clubs last few league games were completed on Saturday. Awakeri Aces saved their one of best for last in the 8th grade 1st division. Aces played the Ohope Pirates and passed the ball around very well. Good work from Sarah Sheaff in particular helped Finn Spod score a hat-trick. There was lots of sideline support as the teams went on to draw 3 - 3.
In the 7th grade HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets played well against James Street Stars, despite losing 4 - 0. Kaia Reid was named player of the day for her excellent saves in goal. Matthys Wessells was also in top form.
The Awakeri Incredibles played Ohope United in the 7th grade. Incredibles were short of players and did well, losing 2 - 0. Player of the day Ryan Mapu was goalie and he made lots of saves.
Awakeri Fliers played Ohope Mustangs in the 6th grade. The Fliers hit the post several times, whereas Ohope put their chances in the goal to win 5 - 0. The Fliers have shown lots of improvement over the year and have enjoyed their games.
Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars put a lot of pressure on their Opotiki Magpies opponents in the first half in their 13th grade fixture. But the Magpies were too strong in the second half and won 3 - 0.Brooke Theobald's work in defence saw her named player of the day. Matthew Eveleens was also a strong contributor.
The Awakeri players can now look forward to their break-up on Saturday 26 September and the prospect of family soccer in the summer.
