The first win of the season for the Awakeri Fliers was the highlight for Awakeri's soccer teams on Saturday.
Fliers were away to Saints Dolphins in the 6th grade. It was a good game, with Ezra Young's goal making the difference. Ella Jones was player of the day, as Fliers won the game 1 - 0.
Also in the 6th grade, Awakeri Warriors had a good battle with Te Teko Korimako. Emma Hannan got stuck in for Warriors and was named player of the day. Logan Calder and Zalea Tipping were also in top form. Te Teko won the game 4 - 0.
In the junior girls league, Awakeri Angels played with a lot of confidence against Thornton Reds. Everyone chased the ball and defended well. Player of the day went to Sadie Van Beekhuizen for scoring the Angels' first goal of the season. The final score was a 1 - 1 draw.
Awakeri Incredibles had a tough 7th grade game with K Town Krickets, losing 6 - 0. Robbie Perkinson's effort from start to finish saw him named player of the day for Incredibles.
Also in the 7th grade, HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets played Kawerau Two. Midgets are showing steady improvement in their play. Kaia Reid was their player of the day. Kawerau won the game 4 - 0.
In the 8th grade premier division, Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons held Saints to 0 - 0 at half time. Saints determination got them to a 3 - 0 win in the end. Ngaio Wilson earned player of the day for her efforts as goalie. Jacob Davis also had a strong game for Dragons.
Awakeri Aces put together some good team work in their 8th grade 1st division game against Rangitaiki. Player of the day Sarah Sheaff showed good skills and support play. Rangitaiki won the game 1 - 0.
Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks played well, especially in defence, against Kawerau in the 9th grade premier division. Quest Tipping scored for Sharks, and Elana Spod was named player of the day for her efforts. Kawerau scored a late winner to take the game 2 - 1.
9th grade Awakeri Mosquitoes lost to the very talented Cookson Forbes Opotiki team, six - nil. The Awakeri Mosquitoes coach was proud of the heart shown by his team, as they never gave up and narrowly missed scoring several times. Shannon Frost was named player of the day for her efforts in goal in the first half and her strong play in the midfield in the second. Sam Cook also played well and is becoming a fine goal keeper.
In the 11th grade premier division, Energyscan Awakeri Wildhogs were no match for Ohope. Tio Geerlings was player of the day for some very good play as keeper and in the midfield. Lucas Schlepers and Marc Anderson scored for Wildhogs. Ohope won the game 9 - 2.
Janice Hendl and Associates Awakeri Hawks had a 2 - 1 loss against ESP Whakatane Spirits in the 11th grade 1st division. Hawks worked well with accurate passing and many attempts at goal. The player of the day award went to Liam Wilkinson, for keeping the pressure on the other team. Kara Sanson and Samantha Looney also had excellent games with some strong tackles.
In the 13th grade, Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars put in a competitive performance against Saints. Kayla Turvey's attacking work had her named player of the day. Others to shine included Daniel Reeves and Ben Murphy. Saints won the game 5 - 0 in the end.
