The match up between their two premier 9th grade teams was the highlight of Awakeri's junior soccer on Saturday.
After being rained off the first time round, the two 9th grade Awakeri teams came head to head in an exciting action packed game. The Mosquitoes were in the lead 2 - 1 at half time, but determination from the Performance Zone Awakeri Sharks saw the sharks scoring a goal in the closing five minutes, to even the game up to a 2 - 2 draw. Both teams played very well and showed some excellent skills. The Mosquitoes player of the day was Shannon Frost, who put in a gutsy effort in goal. Jamie Findlay and Sean Young also played well. Quest Tipping and PJ Bolton were the scorers for Sharks.
Bay Milking Equipment Awakeri T-Rexes played the spirited Opotiki Ringoes in the Junior Girls grade. T-Rexes managed a good win, 3 - 0. Emily Julian scored twice and Renske Brabant got one. The player of the day was Jenae Brownless. She did well at stopping fast breaks and won the ball well. Shayna Penberth showed plenty of enthusiasm with many big kicks up the field. Tara van Beekhuizen, Taryn Forbes, and Monique Ruiter worked hard all game, as usual, providing good ball for their team mates.
Also in the Junior Girls, Columbus Cafe Awakeri Angels tried hard all game but were beaten by a well drilled Te Teko team. Lucy Knott and Juliet Findlay saved plenty of goals in their turns as goalkeeper, while Nicole Webb and player of the day Sadie Van Beekhuizen tried hard on attack.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Warriors went down to a late goal to Ohope Storm Troopers. Warriors had defended excellently, putting their practice skills into action. Player of the day Zalea Tipping showed good skills and nearly scored a goal. Jack Young and Logan Calder did well in their turns in goal too. Ohope won 1 - 0.
Awakeri Fliers had a tough game against Kawerau Two in the 6th grade, losing 6 - 0. Campbell Forsyth's efforts earned him player of the day.
Matthys Wessels made some good runs with the ball for HTL Spreading Awakeri Midgets in the 7th grade. Kaia Reid put in a good effort too. Te Teko Tuatara beat the Midgets 2 - 0.
Also in the 7th grade, Awakeri Incredibles woke up after half time in their game against Ohope Raiders. Player of the day Gene Brown put in some excellent work for Awakeri. Raiders won the game.
In the 8th grade premiers, Da Silva Autos Awakeri Dragons played Saints. Cody Bragg and Isaiah Davidson linked up well for Davidson to score. Korben Wilson and Matthew Webb did well in their turns in goal. Ngaio Wilson showed good improvement in her play too. Saints won the game 5 - 1.
Awakeri Aces played the bigger and faster Whakatane Yellow Fins in the 8th grade 1st division. Finn Spod was named player of the day for his good team play up front. The Yellow Fins won 7 - 0.
Energyscan Awakeri Wildhogs were fired up on Saturday, and had a fantastic game against Opotiki Anacondas in the 11th grade premiers. Wildhogs had a lot of the play, but couldn't score, with Opotiki running out the winners 2 - 0. Sam Middleton had a great first half as goalie and came out in second half as striker. He was Wildhogs' player of the day. Once again Jared Turvey played an outstanding game, as did Shane Hope.
Janice Hendl & Associates Awakeri Hawks played a good defensive game against Kawerau in the 11th grade 1st division. Kawerau had many shots at goal but could only get one in. Tyson Turnbull earned player of the day for his great defence. Tyrin Penberth also had a good game and played the second half in goal. The score was 1 - 0 to Kawerau.
In the 13th grade, Murphy Brothers Awakeri Avatars played Ohope Stealth, and held them to a 4 - 0 win. Avatars' keeper, Joshua Ridley, made some fine saves and was named player of the day. Joshua Klein Ovink and Daniel Reeves made some good attacking runs too.
