11th August 2012

There were two highlights for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday. Wild Cats had an exciting game in the 11th grade and both Awakeri's 8th grade teams put in a good effort when they played each other.
Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats had a great game against St Josephs in the 11th grade 1st division. Both teams traded goals right up until the final whistle. Wild Cats' player of the day was Georgia Leonard in goal, who was fantastic at coming off her line and making it difficult for the attackers. A highlight of the game was Ngaio Wilson scoring her first goal. Like all good wingers she was on the far post and latched onto a great cross. Emily Julian had an excellent game too and scored two goals. Sophie Lawrence, Emily Robbie and Taryn Forbes all had strong games. Wild Cats lost 4 - 3 but felt like winners.
In the 11th grade premier division HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons lost 4 - 0 to Saints. Dragons put in a good effort, with Renske Brabant-Weitkamp player of the day. Korben Wilson also impressed in his turn in goal.
Awakeri Comets had their first home loss of the season in the 9th grade premier division, losing to Whakatane Phoenix. The game started evenly with Whakatane's first goal being leveled by Kevin Paulsen before the visitors added an extra three before half time. Awakeri came out much stronger in the second half but Whakatane scored one more before the end of the match which ended 5 - 1. Player of the day was Ben White who chased and tackled tirelessly, battling for everything.
In the 9th grade 1st division, Awakeri Small Blues lost against St Joseph's 5 - 1. Luella Howe did an excellent job as a first time goalie in the second half. The first half goalie was Corisa Johnston. The player of the day was Nicole Webb, who was everywhere. She had her best game so far.
In the 8th grade Awakeri Atoms had a game plan to be strong in defence against their free scoring club counterparts Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers. Atoms did well, frustrating the Rangers with stubborn defence. Hayden Baxter opened the scoring in the first half. The game then settled into a stalemate until early in the second half when Keaton Turvey doubled the advantage with a fine individual effort. Rangers played well in patches and squandered some chances, while the Atoms team all played with determination.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors played a hard game against Saints Swordfish in the 7th grade, going down 6 - 3. Jamie Julian, Blake Hermansen and Bonnie-Marie Wetting were goal scorers for the Warriors. Blake earned himself player of the day for his excellent defensive work.
The Awakeri Rockers had a really good 7th grade game against Ohope Jets, losing 1 - 0. The player of the day was awarded to Keighley McNeil for a massive effort on attack. Rhys Robertson impressed with some unrelenting defence.
Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Tigers had good turn out for their 6th grade football. Summer Jones got player of the day.
In the 13th grade, Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks were not at their best against Kawerau Renegades. Katy White earned player of the day with her determined play, an example that some of her team mates would do well to copy. Sam Cook was busy in goal, but acquitted himself well. Kawerau won the game 8 - 3, with Awakeri's goals being scored by Fletcher Forsyth (2) and Jamie Findlay.
