12th May 2012

The first games for the 6th grade teams, and another very good result for the Comets were the highlights for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
Awakeri Grasshoppers and Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Tigers met with lots of other 6th grade teams at Warren Park on Saturday. They all had fun and showed some good skills. Ella Forbes got player of the day for Grasshoppers, for showing exceptional dribbling skills which the rest of the team learnt from. For the Tigers, Mary Bragg was player of the day for her excellent dribbling skills. Other players that really played hard and got stuck in were Summer Jones, and Marshall Foxx. Jon Tiwha-Smith and Joseph Bateson scored a number of goals.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors played Ohope Jets in the 7th grade, winning 3 - 0. The goals were scored by Blake Hermansen (2) and Bonnie-Marie Wetting. Great passing and fantastic teamwork was shown by the Warriors. Player of the day was awarded to Bonnie-Marie Wetting for awesome defence play and solid work in backing up.
Also in the 7th grade, Saints beat The Awakeri Rockers. Rockers came close to scoring, which was very exciting for the spectators. Rhys Robertson was awarded player of the day for great ball skills and defending. Ashton Turvey also stood out with his excellent defending and marking.
In the 8th grade Awakeri Atoms were unlucky in having a bye for the second week in a row! However, Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers did play and had a comfortable win against Opotiki Kerry Nott Pharmacy. Cody Hall was named player of the day for a great defensive performance. He really did what was asked of him. Kaleb Muggeridge and Hayden Baxter carried on their good goal scoring form.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets went to Otakiri this week in the 9th grade premier division. They came away with a great victory. They started off very well and were quickly in control, with Campbell Forsyth grabbing a hat-trick and Kevin Paulsen adding another two, to be leading 5 - 0 at half time. The second half started just as well with, Tiaki Hori scoring to extend the lead. Otakiri started to put together some good attacks and were rewarded with a couple of goals. They also had a couple of shots hit the post, before Ethan Patterson scored Awakeri's seventh. A couple more goals from player of the day Forsyth made the final score 9 - 2.Comets will be looking forward to playing unbeaten Whakatane this week.
In the 9th grade 1st division the Awakeri Small Blues had a very physical game against James Street. The girls lost 8 - 1 and copped a few injuries. Lilly du Toit scored the goal and the player of the day was Corisa Johnston.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats were unlucky to lose to K Town Chiefs 3 - 1. The Awakeri girls had dominated the first half, going up one nil, thanks to a Taryn Forbes goal. Wild Cats played some good football, led by player of the day Jenae Brownless. Linette Lengkeek also performed very well.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons were given a lesson in starting strong and keeping the pressure on by Ohope on Saturday morning in the 11th grade premier division. Although there were some good early saves in goal by Monique Ruiter the pressure soon told and Ohope kept at it, racking up three goals in quick succession. The Dragons stated to awaken with some determined hassling and tackling from Tara van Beekhuizen and made inroads with the swift and skillful Korben Wilson. Ohope still had the wealth of possession and built on their lead. Awakeri were learning the hard way that the ball will always beat the man. Renske Brabant made some incisive plays with very little ball which bodes well for future games if the Dragons can control more possession. However the day belonged to Ohope who deserved their win. Player of the day Korben Wilson was tireless and deserved a goal from a spectacular long range free kick that was rocketing to where the spiders live, only to be denied by the underside of the crossbar and cleared.
In the 13th grade, Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks did too much ball watching in the first half of their game with K Town Jetz and will need to get into games from the start. A much better second half saw them match it with their opposition but it was too late, Jetz winning 6 - 1. Fletcher Forsyth scored a nice goal, beating the well performed Kawerau keeper by lobbing it over him. Gus Olifiers was named player of the day for his strength in defence.
