The first win of the season for 7th grade Rockers was one of
the highlights for Awakeri football on Saturday.
The Awakeri Rockers played Ohope Speedy Seals in the 7th grade, coming away
with a 3 - 2 win. Player of day Shaun Snow attacked and defended very well.
Ashton Turvey showed his great ball skills and defended hard. Keighley McNeil
helped Kaia Skipps get our first goal of the season. Skipps scored again and
team work pressure brought about an own goal. The Rockers were high spirited
  after their performance.
Also in the 7th grade, a great team effort saw R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors
to a comfortable win over Allandale Wizards. Oliver Forsyth, Elijah Wetting,
Blake Hermansen and Jamie Julian all scored. Oliver was awarded player of the
day for a good all round game. Katie Mahy also had a fantastic game with solid
  defence.
Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers had a comfortable win against Ohope in the
8th grade. Hayden Baxter got player of the day for his energy and goal scoring.
There were good performances too from Keaton Turvey and Cambell Julian. It was
a good over all team performance. There is much better passing and moving each
  week.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets had a home game against Otakiri in the 9th grade
premier division. Campbell Forsyth scored a couple of early goals, with Kevin
Paulsen and Ethan Patterson adding to give Awakeri a 4 - 0 lead at half time.
Otakiri had a couple of good attacks and only remained scoreless due to Ben
Olifiers in goal, where he even saved a penalty. In the second half Forsyth
scored a couple of quick goals to start the half, then Paulsen completed his
hat-trick before player of the day Patterson was rewarded for his tireless running
and tackling, with his second goal of the game. Tiaki Hori completed the scoring
  in a 10-0 victory.
In the 9th grade 1st division, Awakeri Small Blues had a really good game against
Whakatane Town Flames. For the first time, proper soccer was played: the backs
passed to the wings, the wings took the ball up and passed to the centres and
  goals were scored.
The Small Blues won 5 - 1, with goals by Olivia Sheaff (2), Maci Bateson (2)
and Tessa Dodson. The player of the day was Taylor Skipps, who was unlucky not
to get a couple of goals herself. The whole team played extremely well, and
thanks to Nicole Webb, who stayed in goal the whole game.
The HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons played out a highly entertaining game hosting
the Whakatane Thunder in the 11th grade premier division on Saturday. The central
pairing of Jacob Davis and Korben Wilson were up for a big game and Whakatane
had to work hard for a sight on goal. When they did, new keeper Isaiah Davidson
was well positioned. Although Whakatane were pressing more, the Awakeri break
outs in the form of Sarah Sheaff with support from Caleb Marshall kept the visitors
defence on their toes. Before the break the Thunder were rewarded with one goal
but the crowd knew it was game on. The second half was also played at a terrific
pace with Ryan Magee redoubling his efforts and gaining player of the day performance
from left back. Davidson made some great saves but eventually Whakatane forced
some one on ones which were converted. Awakeri pressed on especially through
Renske Brabant on the right, but just couldn't get the goal they certainly deserved
for such a fine team effort. The final score was Thunder 4 Dragons 0.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats had
a 6 - 0 loss to Ohope. The player of the day was Keely Forbes, who has mastered
the skill of switching play which creates heaps of space and lots of great attacking
opportunities. The score does not reflect that Wild Cats had their chances,
played lots of organised structured soccer, and the team spirit is very good.

Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks had a close 13th grade game with Opotiki Cookson Forbes.
Sharks are really starting to put their game together, with improved passing
and use of space. Player of the day Fletcher Forsyth scored his second hat trick
in a row, but the Opotiki side won out in the end, 6 - 3.
In the 6th grade The Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Tigers played against Ohope
Beach School. Phoebe Carter got player of the day for excellent play in the
  game.
