The continued improvement in Awakeri's oldest football team was
a pleasing feature for the club on Saturday.
Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks had an exciting 13th grade game against Whakatane Town
Rovers. Sharks dominated a lot of territory, but Rovers caught them on the break
several times. Rovers were ahead 3 - 2 at half time and went on to win 7 - 4.
Good crosses and some creative play from Daniel Perkinson set up Fletcher Forsyth
for his third hat trick on the trot. Katy White was also on hand to score from
a good cross. In the midfield, Millie Patterson's skill and determination saw
her named player of the day.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats had
their second win of the season, beating James Street 1 - 0. Player of the day
was Ngaio Wilson for good goalkeeping and being active in the field. Emily Julian
was the goal scorer after receiving a great pass from Taryn Forbes. Jenae Brownless
and Sophie Lawrence played very well in defence too. It was a pleasing and deserved
win, as the Wild Cats have been playing some good structured football for a
few weeks know without a result.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons started slowly against Whakatane Town Yellowfins
in the premier division. They did wake up and compete, but were beaten convincingly
in the end. Ryan Magee impressed, making some good brave saves in goal. Jake
Rowling's determination earned him player of the day, while Caleb Marshall also
impressed with his efforts.
In the 9th grade premier division, Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets had a tough
away game at Whakatane Phoenix. They started very strongly and kept pressure
on the home team and after Campbell Forsyth scored a great individual goal and
a free-kick directly into the goal, Comets were leading 2 - 0 at half-time.
Phoenix came out much stronger in the second half and were rewarded with three
good goals after some impressive passing. Comets showed their character and
came back when Kevin Paulsen scored an equalizer. Comets' player of the day
was Caleb Keightley, who showed great spirit in challenging for everything.
Both coaches agreed the game was exciting, entertaining and a fair result with
honours shared in a 3 - 3 draw.
Awakeri Small Blues had a really good game in the 1st division. The Awakeri
girls lost 3 - 2 to Whakatane Town Warriors. Both Awakeri's goals were scored
by Olivia Sheaff and she got player of the day. Corisa Johnston was in goal
the whole game. She also did really well, making some excellent saves.
In the 8th grade, Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers had a comfortable win against
Ohope Diamonds. The player of the day was Keaton Turvey. Hayden Baxter was again
among the goals and Cody Hall and Tyson Yates played well too.
Awakeri Atoms had a great match against Ohope Sapphire and Swords in the 8th
grade. It was a fairly active game with both teams playing well and ending in
a 2 - 2 draw. Joel Carter got player of the day for a top effort in attack and
defence and Beth Wilson took the most improved for getting well involved in
defence.
The Awakeri Rockers had a good 7th grade game with Otakiri Blue. Kaia Skipps
is reading the game well and she was named player of the day. Shaun Snow scored
the goal for Rockers. Otakiri won the game 5 - 1.
Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Tigers had another fun week in the 6th grade.
They had a game against James Street. It was a great competition, James St just
won. Addison Dodson was the player of the day, showing great commitment and
playing well.
Awakeri Grasshoppers had a good day in the 6th grade too. Their player of the
day was Mitchell Du Toit who was solid in the field as usual. Kylah Lawrence
scored three awesome goals. Grasshoppers played two games, losing to St Josephs
and winning against a very spirited Whakatane side.
