25th August 2012
Saturday was the final day of football for a number of Awakeri's
teams. A couple of teams stood out.
A last minute goal ensured Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers went through the
whole 8th grade season without being beaten. Down on players, with no subs and
two sick boys, Rangers entered the final day of the end of season tournament
hoping to continue their good season with a good showing in the championship
competition. From the five games they gained three wins and two draws which
was enough for them to win the tournament on goal difference. The players worked
really hard and looked exhausted by the end of the day, especially those who
were playing through illness. Rangers, coached by Dan Baxter, have shown real
improvement throughout the season, showing good determination. Ending up as
champions is testament to this.
In the 9th grade premier division the two top teams played out an exciting head
to head in their final game. Second placed Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets were
away to champions Kawerau. Kawerau started very strongly and soon raced out
to a 3 - 0 lead. However the Comets didn't give up and were rewarded before
half-time when Cody Cook scored his first goal in two years, from a Kevin Paulsen
corner. The game turned around with Awakeri applying all the pressure and Kevin
Paulsen scored two goals to bring the teams level. Kawerau responded with an
incredible goal to win the game 4 - 3. The effort was huge from everybody and
player of the day could have gone to several players, but it was shared between
Noah Robinson and Kevin Paulsen. The spectators were well entertained by the
contest.
In the 7th grade, excellent teamwork and great passing helped Oliver Forsyth
secure a hat trick in the Awakeri Warriors win against Otakiri. Elijah Wetting,
Jamie Julian and Blake Hermansen also scored. Katie Mahy was awarded player
of the day for her reading of the game and awesome passing.
Saint Swordfish won 6 - 0 against the Awakeri Rockers in the 7th grade. Player
of the day for the Rockers was Mia Sutton, who attacked very well.
In the 6th grade, Awakeri Tigers and Grasshoppers joined forces for their session.
Joseph Bateson was player of the day.
