There were not many highlights for Awakeri's older football teams
on Saturday; however, Comets provided one in the 9th grade.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets were at home to Ohope Strikers and knew it was
going to be a tough 9th grade premier division game. This proved to be the case
with player of the day Daniel Brown making some amazing saves that kept the
visitors scoreless. A goal in each half from Kevin Paulsen, the second a fantastic
solo effort slotted in from close range after a run past five Ohope players,
provided the only scores in a 2 - 0 victory. Awakeri's tackling and support
play from the whole team were the features of the game.
In the 13th grade, Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks played Whakatane Galaxy. Galaxy
won 10 - 0. Player of the day for Sharks was shared between Jayden Hoefsloot
and Jamie Findlay.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons played Kawerau Crusaders in the 11th grade premier
division, losing 7 - 0. Player of the day Tara van Beekhuizen showed determination.
Ryan Magee put in another good performance as keeper, and Renske Brabant-Weitkamp
showed good skills up the wing.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats lost
4 - 0 to Thornton. Emma Paine played well in goal and the girls showed a fighting
spirit for the full sixty minutes. Linette Lengkeek was player of the day.
Awakeri's other all girls team, the Small Blues, had an extremely hard fought
game against Whakatane Town Panthers in the 9th grade 1st division. It was a
nil all draw. Corisa Johnston was goalie for the Small Blues. She did some excellent
saves and was named player of the day.
Awakeri Atoms played Kawerau Raiders in the 8th grade. Raiders took the win
7 - 1 but it was a well contested game. Liam White was player of the day for
Atoms and Kyzarck Cornwall most improved.
Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers had a good 8th grade outing against Kawerau
Krazy 8tz. Kaedyn Portsmouth was player of the day and Kaleb Muggeridge, Cambell
Julian and Hayden Baxter were among the goals. Rangers had a 7 - 0 win.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors enjoyed taking part in the 7th grade tournament,
playing five games. Elijah Wetting, Oliver Forsyth, Jamie Julian and Blake Hermansen
all scored goals. Bonnie-Marie Wetting, Kaia Skipps and Keanen Dyson also all
had solid games. Elijah was named player of the day for his tireless effort
across all games.
The Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Tigers had another exciting day in the 6th
grade. They had a match up against the Awakeri Grasshoppers. Marshall Foxx played
really well and always puts in lots of hard work. Joseph Bateson scored six
goals! Caitlin Eivers was awarded the player of the day for playing well and
having great ball skills.
Grasshoppers had a fun start to the morning teaming up with the Awakeri Tigers
for a while before playing the Tigers. Ella Forbes was player of the day after
scoring nine goals! She had great support from Kylah and Bailee Lawrence against
half of the Tigers. Meanwhile, Mitchell Du Toit, Nathan Johns and Ozaiyah Cornwall
teamed up to have a good game against the other half of the Tigers.
