The first win of the season for Awakeri's older all girl team
was a highlight for the club on Saturday.
Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats won their 11th grade 1st division
game against James Street Legends, and looked good in the process. Wild Cats
defenders Linette Lengkeek, Emma Paine and Georgia Leonard were well organised.
They made their tackles and cleared with some good passes down the line. Player
of the day Emily Julian showed poise on the ball to score the goals. She then
played goalie and was like a brick wall. Keely Forbes played well in the midfield
and Wild Cats won 2 - 1.
Two very evenly matched teams made for a very exciting game in the 11th grade
premier division, between HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons and Opotiki Hickeys
Sports. Both teams had opportunities but solid defending and goalkeeping kept
both team scoreless right through to the last five minutes of the game, when
Opotiki scored after a strong series of attacks. Awakeri were unable to get
one back so the game finished 1 - 0 to Opotiki. The player of the day for Awakeri
was Caleb Marshall, for being super strong in defence. It was a very pleasing
result, with the whole team producing their best effort yet.
In the 9th grade premier division, there was the big match between unbeaten
sides Tarawera Strikers and Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets. The Comets were competitive
for the first half, but Tarawera's strong team play came through and they won
the game 5 - 0. For Comets, Ben White's determined defence earned him player
of the day.
Awakeri's second girls team, the Small Blues had an awesome game against Ohope
Stingrays in the 9th grade 1st division. The Small Blues all played really well
against their bigger all boys opponents. Ohope won the game 2 - 0. Awakeri's
player of the day was Maci Bateson.
Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers played Saints Shooters in the 8th grade. Rangers
had a comfortable win. Rangers passed the ball around well. Hayden Baxter's
goals and good tackling saw him named player of the day. Tyson Yates, who scored
his first goal, and Cody Hall were others to shine.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Atoms played Whakatane Town G Force. The team
effort wasn't reflected in the 6 - 0 loss by the Atoms but all involved had
fun. Player of the day went to Liam White, who had a great presence throughout
and most improved player went to Joel Carter with some excellent defence.
The Awakeri Rockers kindly lent James Street players so they could have their
7th grade game. The Rockers player of the day was Ashton Turvey for great defence
and for being the most improved player. A big thank you to Shaun Snow and Bailey
Anderson Ingoe for being great sports and helping out James Street when their
team was short.
Also in the 7th grade, R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a comfortable
win over Ohope Speedy Seals. Keanen Dyson was awarded player of the day for
all round effort. Bonnie-Marie Wetting also had a fantastic game, scoring a
hat trick. Jamie Julian, Elijah Wetting and Katie Mahy also scored.
