The first win of the season for the 8th grade Awakeri Atoms was the highlight of Saturday's play for Awakeri's football teams.
Liam White opened the scoring early in the game between Atoms and Ohope Diamonds. Diamonds scored an equaliser soon after and then it was an even game, until Ben Davey-Emms scored the winning goal just before full time. Ben Davey Emms was again player of the day, with Paige Carter the most improved.
Also in the 8th grade, Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers won against a determined Allandale team 5 - 0. The goal scorers were Hayden Baxter, Kaleb Muggeridge, Keaton Turvey and Cambell Julian. The team was awarded the player of the day, for playing well together and really looking to move the ball around.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets tried out some new positions in their 9th grade premier division game with Eastpack Opotiki. The score was 0 - 0 at half time. Kevin Paulsen came out of goal in the second half to score for Comets. Campbell Forsyth doubled the lead for a final score of 2 - 0 to Comets. Regular goalkeeper Ben Olifiers did well out on the field and was named player of the day.
In the 9th grade 1st division, Awakeri Small Blues won the second half 1 - 0 against James Street Green Dragons, unfortunately they lost the first half 4 - 0. Tayla Jones scored the Small Blues' goal. The player of the day was Ella Jones, who played goalie first half and made some really awesome saves.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons had a slow start in their 11th grade premier division game against Ohope Steelers, quickly going behind 2 - 0. However they woke up and finished the half strongly. Player of the day Finn Spod was excellent in defence and also did the header of the year! Monique Ruiter made some strong challenges at left back. Jacob Davis made some good passes in the midfield and centre back Isaiah Davidson scored a fine late goal, rounding the keeper to score. Ohope won the game 6 - 1.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats had a great 5 - 3 win over Kawerau Chiefs. Once again it was a great team effort with structure and passing being the standout features of Wild Cats game. Jenae Brownless has adapted to her new role as centre midfielder amazingly well which frees up Emily Julian and Keely Forbes to look for attacking opportunities. Forbes scored a hat trick and showed excellent control on the ball. Emily Julian and Emily Robbie got one goal each. Linette Lengkeek, Georgia Leonard and Sophie Lawrence all played well on defence too.
In the 13th grade, Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks put in a solid performance against the Kawerau Jets going down 2 - 0. The score was locked at nil all for much of the match and the Sharks created plenty of opportunities which unfortunately they could not convert to goals. The Sharks continue to show improvement across the board. Player of the day was awarded to Liam Wilkinson who had an excellent game as stand in goalie for the match.
The 6th grade Awakeri Grasshoppers managed to keep moving on a very cold day. Their player of the day was Bailee Lawrence, who scored her first goal of the year. Kylah Lawrence scored two more goals this week with great support from Ella Forbes, Mitchell du Toit, Nathan John and Emma Thompson.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a fast paced game against St Josephs Dragons in the 7th grade, going down 5 - 2. Goals for the Warriors were scored by Blake Hermansen and Oliver Forsyth. Bonnie-Marie Wetting was awarded player of the day for fantastic attacking play.
Also in the 7th grade, The Awakeri Rockers lost 3 - 1 to Allandale. The player of the day was Shaun Snow. He put great pressure on the other team and keeping up the chase on the ball. The goal scorer was Keighly McNeil.
