There were some very competitive games involving Awakeri's football teams this week.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors faced a tough battle against James Street in the 7th grade, winning 2 - 1. Bonnie-Marie Wetting and Katy Mahy were goal scorers with Bonnie-Marie securing player of the day for her excellent support play.
Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers had a 3 - 2 win against unbeaten Kawerau Raiders in the 8th grade. There was a hat-trick from Rangers' leading scorer. Cody Hall was named player of the day, for a much improved performance. Kaleb Muggeridge, Keaton Turvey and Tyson Yates also played well.
Awakeri Atoms had an enjoyable 8th grade game at Kawerau, despite only four players turning up...thankfully the opposition lent them a player! The game was a 2 - 2 draw against the Kawerau Krazy 8tz with some good phases of play. Ben Davey Emms was player of the day and Paige Carter got most improved,
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets were away to Otakiri in the 9th grade premier division. They started slowly, going behind within the first five minutes. However, Campbell Forsyth, Kevin Paulsen and Ethan Patterson all scored goals and at the end of the game Awakeri ran out 4 - 1 winners. The player of the day was Ben Olifiers, for an all-round performance with great defensive work and good support play that helped set up the goals. It was pleasing to see some good passing play and attacking runs up the wing with the ball by the Comets' defenders.
In the 9th grade 1st division, Awakeri Small Blues lost 5 - 0 to Ohope. Tessa Dodson put in a big effort, attacking well and almost scoring a couple of times. She was named player of the day. Playing goalkeeper took courage. Both Corisa Johnston and Nicole Webb got injured in goal, and Luella Howe did well taking over the job.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons had a good outing to play Opotiki in the 11th grade premier division. The game was end to end with plenty of excitement for the spectators. Player of the day Jake Rowling tackled his heart out. Jacob Davis was solid in the centre of defence. Sarah Sheaff held the ball up well on attack. Finn Spod scored a contender for goal of the season after bursting through, playing a one - two and then smacking the ball into the goal. Opotiki took the game 2 - 1.
