9th June 2012

The theme of the 6th grade teams enjoying their new set up at Warren Park each Saturday is a recurring one.
Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Tigers 6th grade had a fun morning. The team is improving every week and learning lots of new skills. Joseph Bateson was player of the day, scoring 5 goals in the game and playing hard. Phoebe Carter was also a stand out, showing improvement and playing well and Addison Dodson showed a lot of commitment and dedication. All the players are getting stuck in.
Awakeri Grasshoppers had a great day in the 6th grade too, all the team are showing really good skills. Player of the day was Jonte Moore, who is a natural talent and was in devastating form scoring 5 goals. Bailee Lawrence showed that, at four years old, she could keep up with the big kids well too.
The Awakeri Rockers played Saints in the 7th grade, losing 3 nil, but was a fantastic game. Rockers played very well, they have really improved. The player of the day was Bailey Anderson Ingoe for showing great first defence skills.
Also in the 7th grade, R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a comfortable win over Otakiri. Fantastic team play and excellent passing allowed Elijah Wetting, Oliver Forsyth and Jamie Julian to all score goals. Elijah Wetting was awarded player of the day for his following up of the ball and great attacking play.
The Awakeri Atoms had a good game against the Saints Shooters in the 8th grade. The game was a draw, with the two teams fairly evenly matched. All the Atoms showed improvement of both attack and defence. Player of the day again went to Ben Davey-Emms, who scored 5 goals. The most improved player was Kyzarck Cornwall, who also managed his first goal of the season.
Also in the 8th grade, Mags & Tyres Awakeri Rangers had their hardest test so far. At a boggy Bluett Park, Hayden Baxter carried on his record of scoring in every game when he opened the scoring. Ohope pulled one back which sparked Rangers into life. Some good interplay between Kaleb Muggeridge and Cambell Julian caused Ohope some problems. Rangers went on to win 5 - 1. Tyson Yates earned player of the day for his energy and enthusiasm. The coach was also pleased with the overall team performance from his improving side.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Comets had a great game away to Ohope in the 9th grade premier league. A very even first half ended goal-less, despite some good attacks by both sides. In the second half Kevin Paulsen made a couple of good runs and finished them well to give the Comets a 2 - 0 lead. Ohope pulled one back and would have equalized if it hadn't been for some great saves by Ben Olifiers. Player of the day Cody Cook made some fantastic runs, tackles and passes and was unlucky not to score himself late in the game. It was a very pleasing all-round performance from Comets, deserving of the 2 - 1 win.
In the 9th grade 1st division, Awakeri Small Blues played Saints Crusaders. Rylee Looney was the player of the day. Crusaders won 2 - 0.
Another slow start cost the HTL Spreading Awakeri Dragons dearly when away to St Josephs in the 11th grade premier division on a chilly Saturday morning. New keeper Ryan Magee made some good early saves to warm his hands but the attacks eventually yielded fruit for the Saints. Centre back Jacob Davis is reading the play well and cutting out passes with Isaiah Davidson always working to provide an outlet in midfield. However the home side also had skill and speed on the flanks and profited from these switches in play. Renske Brabant-Weitkamp showed real steel in attitude and was deservedly named player of the day, with Monique Ruiter also tough in the tackle. At right-half Jake Rowling had busy day and rose to the task, never giving up. The Dragons are home to Whakatane Town Force next week.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Barrington Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats played really well in the first half, taking a one nil lead into half time against Saints Rockets. Keely Forbes was delivering great through balls, which Emily Julian kept latching onto and she eventually scored. There were strong games by Jenae Brownless, Ngaio Wilson and Sophie Lawrence. The second half was a struggle, with Saints becoming more committed and scoring two good goals in the last seven minutes for a 2 - 1 win. Wild Cats' player of the day was Emma Paine, who is outstanding every week at tackling and making clearance kicks.
Get Fresh Awakeri Sharks had their best game of the season so far in the 13th grade. Sharks were away at Kawerau Renegades. An exciting first half had the home team leading 5 - 4. Good through balls from Katy White and Jack Du Toit gave Fletcher Forsyth some opportunities and he scored a hat trick. Jaspreet Dharmet also scored with a lovely flick over the keeper. However, Sharks ran out of steam a bit in the second half, and the game ended 8 - 4. Jack Du Toit gave a terrier like performance and was named player of the day. Millie Patterson played very well too, putting pressure on her opponents and making some good tackles.
