The best result of the season for 11th grade Comets and the toughest test of the season for 8th grade Warriors were the highlights of Saturday's games for the Awakeri Football Club.
In the 11th grade premier division, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had a good win against Saints Crusaders. The team passed well and opened up a good lead before Saints pulled a couple of goals back. Two goals each from Kevin Paulsen and Korben Wilson gave Awakeri a 4-2 lead at half-time. In the second half Comets kept the pressure up and Korben Wilson added another three in a great goal scoring display to complete a 7-2 victory. Liam McCormack's running and passing earned him player of the day.
Insitu Heritage Awakeri Sharks were up against the very strong Whakatane Town Surfers team in the 13th grade. Whakatane won the game 6 - 0, despite some good work in their turns as keeper by Emma Paine and Brianna Smith. Cody Baker Bragg made some good runs up front and was named player of the day.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Strikers had a very good game with Opotiki Dragons in the 9th grade. The game was played in excellent spirit by both teams. Matthew Reihana was Awakeri's player of the day. Kaleb Muggeridge, who scored a great solo goal, and Olivia Benner were also in top form. Opotiki won the game 3 - 1.
In the 8th grade, R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors faced their nemesis in a 'Clash of the Titans' match against the Saints Swordfish. Warriors took an early lead thanks to a Blake Hermansen hat-trick, however the Saints responded quickly with goals to the talented Daniel Beck. Half time saw the score locked at 3 apiece. Fierce defending from both teams in the second half saw the score locked at 4 all on the final whistle blast. Katie Mahy had a solid game in defence, saving many goals. Player of the day was awarded to Warriors dynamo, Kalib Schuler for his outstanding contribution across the pitch.
The weather was great for Junior Framework on Saturday. 7th grade Kiwi Waste Awakeri Magic had two fairly even scoring games against Ohope and Allandale. Their player of the day was Lilly Muggeridge. Awakeri Alligators player of the day was Nathan John who showed patience and perseverance.
The 6th grade players of the day were Keanen Dyson (Awakeri Lions); Caleb Hanlen (Awakeri Tigers) and the determined and hard working Sophie Growden (Awakeri Rascals).
