The highlight for Awakeri's football teams was the performance
of the 11th grade Wild Cats team.
Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats were at home to Allandale's Ron's
Rebels.
Wild Cats used excellent passing into space. They created width and switched
play and ended up winning 2 - 0. Emily Julian and Taryn Forbes were the goal
scorers. Jenae Brownless had an outstanding game in central midfield, covering
her team mates, making tackles and distributing the ball. However Taryn Forbes
got player of the day, taking on players and putting in great crosses from the
left wing. Linette Lengkeek showed her class as centre defender, securing the
ball and putting in nice passes to the wingers.
In the 13th grade, Insitu Heritage Awakeri Sharks battled well against Saints
Storm. The game started out fairly evenly, but after twenty minutes Saints went
ahead and they led 2 - 0 at half time. Keely Forbes had a couple of good strikes
from free kicks that got the Awakeri supporters excited.
After the break Saints put together some good passing moves to win 6 - 0 in
the end. Sharks came close to scoring several times, with Alex Coventry and
Lara Wills bringing saves from the keeper. Emma Paine's commitment earned her
player of the day.
In the 11th grade premier division, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets
had a very even battle with in the rain Whakatane Yellowfins. Awakeri went behind
but equalised twice with goals from Kevin Paulsen and Ethan Patterson, before
Campbell Forsyth added another for Awakeri to lead 3-2 at half-time. In the
second half a well worked passing move saw Kevin Paulsen increase the lead,
but Yellowfins used the spaces in midfield to better effect and pulled even
before scoring a penalty and a late goal to win 6 - 4. It was a promising start
to the season for Comets Player of the day could have gone to several players
but it went to Campbell Forsyth for good support play, constantly looking and
listening for passing opportunities to create chances.
HTL Spreading Awakeri Lightning's all girls team had to contend with heavy rain
in their 11th grade 1st division game at Otakiri. The girls lost 5-1. Their
player of the day was Katie Growden. Olivia Sheaff was the goal scorer.
The grade 9 Awakeri Strikers had a tough opening game facing a skillful Ohope
team. They played enthusiastically, attacking the ball and creating some good
chances. They kept the score down to 0-6. Cambell Julian performed well in goal,
making many saves. Matthew Reihana-Asquith and Kaleb Muggeridge shone again
and player of the day, Inderpreet Aujla, improved rapidly during the game, making
some crucial tackles and good passes.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Dragons had a hard fought 2 - 1 loss at home to Ohope
Bluefins. Dragons' player of the day was Shaun Snow.
This Saturday, the 6th and 7th grades will swing into action at Warren Park.
