When your luck's out, your luck's out! Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had a frustrating game away to Saints Crusaders in the 11th grade premier division. In the first half all the attacking was done by Awakeri but they were unable to score, hitting the crossbar twice and the post three times. In the second half Saints scored a good goal with a looping shot. They were then able to resist Comets' attempts to draw level, holding on to record their first win of the season. Player of the day for Awakeri was Daniel Brown, who tackled excellently and cleared well, turning defence into attack on several occasions.
Unbeaten Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats had another pleasing win in the 11th grade 1st division, which takes them into a clear lead on the table. The player of the day today was Sophie Lawrence, who scored her first ever goal from the left back position. It was a beautiful long range shot that sailed over the goalie and into the goal. The other scorers were Emily Julian (2), Linette Lengkeek, Taryn Forbes, and Marco Turner who also scored his first ever goal. Wild Cats won 6-4 against Otakiri Thrashers. They used their hallmark positional play and passing to create opportunities.
Also in the 11th grade 1st division, HTL Spreading Awakeri Lightning all girls team lost 3 - 0 to Opotiki Black Magic. It was a really good game, with Lightning's keeper Sarah Sheaff earning player of the match with some excellent work. The energetic Ella Jones was also in top form and Lilly du Toit was strong in defence.
A lovely white frosty pitch greeted Insitu Heritage Awakeri Sharks and Saints All Blues for their game at Awakeri. The two 13th grade teams soon turned the grass green with plenty of energy. Saints excellent passing game gave them plenty of chances, despite the efforts of the defenders, especially player of the day Manjot Farrar and keeper Isaiah Davidson. Saints got to the cut off point of a six goal lead early in the second half, but both teams continued to play good football. The ever hard working Finn Spod almost grabbed a late consolation goal for Sharks, but the defenders did well to race back and clear his shot off the line.
Grade 9 Da Silva Autos Awakeri Strikers got off to a slow start in their game against Allandale Rangers with only ring-in Jamie Julian putting in a good performance. They improved in the second half and created a few good chances, one of which Jamie neatly finished. Unfortunately, they continued to leak goals and lost 7 - 1. The player of the day award went to Keegan Jones for his great effort at training during the week.
Awakeri Dragons had a home game against Kawerau Cougars in the 8th grade. Dragons all played well, recording a comfortable win. Kaia Skipps was in unstoppable form, scoring all the goals except for the one Mia Sutton grabbed.
It was another beautiful morning for soccer in the Junior Framework at Warren Park. Kiwi Waste Awakeri Magic enjoyed their two small sided games in the 7th grade. They won one and lost one. The player of the day was Jade Moloney.
It was a great morning for the Awakeri Rascals in the 6th grade too. Ashley Jennings was named player of the day for fabulous footwork, great positioning on the field and for her first goal!
Other players of the day were: Bianca Turner (Awakeri Alligators), Isaac Davidson (Awakeri Tigers) and Shai Dyson (Awakeri Lions).
