There were a number of highlights for Awakeri's football teams
as they got back into the season after the holiday break.
On the 11th grade 1st division HTL Spreading Awakeri Lightning had their first
win of the season. Player of the day Sarah Sheaff was goalkeeper for the first
half and Thornton Phoenix were ahead 1 - 0 at half time. However, she came out
of goal to score a second half hat trick and earned Lightning a 3 - 1 win. Lightning
communicated well and have some good combinations developing.
Also in the 11th grade 1st division, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats
completed the whole round unbeaten, securing a 5 - 0 win against Whakatane Town
Dominators. Marco Turner was player of the day; he was also a goal scorer. Emily
Julian got the other four. Sophie Lawrence and Renske Brabant were strong in
defence, keeping Whakatane at bay.
In the 11th grade premier league, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets were
away to Kawerau Crusaders. The game started evenly with some brilliant saves
from the Kawerau goalie denying Awakeri. The home team played excellently however
and built up a comfortable lead. Comets' player of the day Korben Wilson controlled
a clearance and fed the ball to Kevin Paulsen, who put Ethan Patterson through
for a consolation goal at the end of the game. Comets had a mixed game, one
moment making basic mistakes, the next showing flashes of brilliant teamwork.
The final score was 7-1 to Kawerau.
In the 13th grade, Insitu Heritage Awakeri Sharks had a tough away trip to the
big and strong Opotiki Tigers team. Tigers had a comfortable win. Consistent
play from Jacob Davis saw him named player of the day for Sharks. Lara Wills
and Sam Cook scored consolation goals for Sharks in the second half.
Da Silva Autos Awakeri Strikers were at home to Whakatane Town Flames in the
9th grade. Strikers played very well and controlled the game. Alex Robbie and
Olivia Benner played their best ever games of football for Strikers, with Kaedyn
Portsmouth getting the nod for player of the day. Olivia Benner, Kaleb Muggeridge,
and Cambell Julian (2) scored the goals in a 4 - 1 win.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors kept up their unbeaten run in the 8th grade,
securing a win over Thornton Mighty Midgets. Blake Hermansen, Jamie Julian,
Oliver Forsyth and Elijah Wetting all scored, with Oliver receiving player of
the day.
Also in the 8th grade, the Awakeri Dragons went down 6 - 2 to Saints Dragons.
Awakeri's goals were scored by Kaia Skipps and Rhys Robertson. The player of
the day was Rhys for his great goal and good all round play.
New Football development officer Rebecca Todd, who is taking over from Mike
Ward, watched the Junior Framework games, despite only arriving from England
the previous day. Mike made a big contribution in his time in the job.
Kiwi Waste Awakeri Magic enjoyed getting back into Junior Framework soccer yesterday
and the weather was beautiful. They played two games with Whakatane Seals, with
Seals winning both by a small margin. The player of the day was Caitlan Eivers.
Other players of the day were: Phoebe Carter (Awakeri Alligators) for her excellent
ball skills; Josh Hart (Awakeri Tigers), Zoe Laurent (Awakeri Rascals) for a
top effort and Leon Mahy (Awakeri Lions).
