Awakeri's football teams were in good form on Saturday.
Great passing and teamwork saw Awakeri Warriors to a good first half in their 8th grade game against Allandale Wizards to continue their unbeaten run. However Allandale came out firing in the second half, keeping the Warriors scoreless. Warriors won the game 4 - 0 with Elijah Wetting and Jamie Julian picking up 2 goals each. Elijah was awarded player of the day for impressive attacking play.
In the 9th grade Whakatane Town Phoenix used team play to overcome R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors 6 - 0. Hard work and good tackling earned Olivia Benner player of the match for the Warriors. Keegan Jones also showed out with improved play
Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had an excellent match against Ohope Vipers in the 11th grade premier division. New goalkeeper Caleb Keightley made some brilliant saves before Ohope scored the opening goal. Awakeri equalised through Emily Julian, who stepped up to the premier division, covering some injured Comets players. It was 1-1 at half-time. Comets had the perfect start to the second half with good teamwork finished by Kevin Paulsen and Campbell Forsyth putting them into a 3-1 lead. Ohope fought back and took their chances well against a hard working Awakeri defence to end up 5-3 winners. It was a great performance from the whole Comets team; players of the day were Caleb Keightley for a fantastic performance in goal and Cody Cook for hard work and great support play in midfield.
In the 11th grade 1st division, HTL Spreading Awakeri Lightning had one of their best games of the season. They had a lot of the attack against James Street Hornets and were unlucky to go down 1 - 0. Lilly Du Toit was named player of the day for her good work as centre forward.
Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats kept up their unbeaten run in the 11th grade 1st division. Ohope Eagles made them work hard, but strong play and very organised team work saw Wild Cats home well. Player of the day Emily Robbie scored a hat trick, Taryn Forbes (2) and Emily Julian were the other scorers in a 6 - 0 win. Others to shine included Sophie Lawrence and the ever reliable Linette Lengkeek in defence and the Ohope keeper who made some fine saves in the second half.
In the 13th grade, Insitu Heritage Awakeri Sharks were at home to Saints Storm. The game was fairly even until the 30th minute when Saints scored. Right on half time Sam Cook did well to block a shot on the goal line, but Saints scored after pouncing on the clearance. Saints went further ahead after the break before Awakeri replied. Lara Wills won the ball and crossed the ball, which was touched on by player of the day Finn Spod, with Sam Cook getting the ball in the net. Late in the game Saints wrapped up a 4 - 1 win.
Awakeri Alligators really enjoyed the 7th grade game day, as it was a change to the normal routine. They played all five games with gusto, making their coaches very proud of their attitude and commitment. The player of the day was Casey Newport.
Kiwi Waste Awakeri Magic played five games on Saturday. We were missing two players, but they did well, winning three out of the five. Their player of the day was Ella Forbes.
It was a great day for the 6th grade Awakeri Rascals. The team was split into boys and girls for the games part, and this worked well. Max Thompson got player of the day for getting involved in the game and for enthusiasm. Awakeri Lions' player of the day was Brad Yuill, and Caleb Hanlen was it for Tigers.
