Awakeri's football teams continued their good season so far with quite a few wins on Saturday.
In the 8th grade, Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Lightning played very well against Ohope Orca. Player of the day Miles Ashton, Ollie Fort and Phoebe Carter were the goal scorers in a 5 – 1 win for the Lightning.
A Jamie Julian hat trick helped R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors to a 6 - 0 win over Ohope Bluefins in the 9th grade. Oliver Forsyth, Kaia Skipps and Blake Hermansen also scored. Elijah Wetting earned player of the day for his fantastic defensive skills and effort.
Also in the 9th grade, SLH Contracting Awakeri Dragons won 4 - 0 against Opotiki Magpies. Three goals were scored by Fearghus Byers and the other by Rhys Robertson. The player of the day went to Mia Sutton whose determination and gusty play was an inspiration to the team.
In the 11th grade 1st division, HTL Spreading Awakeri Crushers played a great game against the Whakatane Dominators, winning 2 - 1. Most of the game was played in the Dominators half with Awakeri having many strikes at goal. Player of the day was awarded to Ella Jones for some great work on the wing. Lilly du Toit and Tara Van Beekhuizen kept up their goal scoring form with a goal each.
Awakeri Store Ultimate Strikers had an exciting game against Whakatane Town Flames in the 11th grade 1st division. Rhylee Mahy got the first two goals in the game. However the Flames came back to win the game 7 – 2. Beth Wilson got player of the day for her determined effort. There was also good consistent play from Thomas Wessells and Inderpreet Singh Aujla.
In the 13th grade, Barringtons Motorlodge Awakeri Wildcats went down 5 – 0 to Whakatane Town Kahunas. The player of the day was Sophie Lawrence, who played positionally very well and was involved in a lot of positive play. Rylie Cavey Bruce had a strong game in defence. The team tried hard all day and played with a good attitude and real enthusiasm. Keely Forbes had a very good game as a goalie.
The younger age groups continue to thrive at the Junior Framework at Warren Park.
6th grade Awakeri Eagles had a great day. The team is definitely improving with every game. The Eagles played four games this week and had a draw, a loss and two wins. There were some fantastic skills shown by Tylah Bateson, Arran Dominick and Asha van Veen but player of the day with to Milan Laurent for her overall improvement and an awesome individual goal!
Awakeri Sharks had some great 6th grade games, with some fierce competition to be had. Sharks did some really good attacking and defending against their opponents. It was also great to see some of the quieter team members really step up and get lots of play. The player of the day was Sonny Tiwha-Smith for his attacking and defending skills.
7th grade Awakeri Rascals had a good day going straight into playing four ten minute games. The first game was a nil all draw against Saints. The second game against Allandale saw Max Thompson get an amazing hat-trick and Sophie Growden get her goal that she had taken so many shots at getting. The third game was against Awakeri Pumas which proved to be an excellent match. All the kids got involved and this is the game where Kobi Wetting-Davidson earned player of the day with a run up half the field, chipped the ball over the heads of the two defenders and into the goal to much celebration on the side-line. The fourth and final game was against Ohope and saw Gemma Snow and Mikey Griffiths get in and do some great kicks. Ohope won that match 3 - 0.
The Awakeri Pumas had a great day in the 7th grade too. Two wins and a loss in the local derby with the Rascals. The player of the day was Caleb Hanlen. His skill level has improved in leaps and bounds and he always listens to coaching.
