Awakeri's older football teams got into their league games this weekend. In the 13th grade, Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wildcats played St Josephs. It was a closely fought match with Saints winning 2-1. Emily Julian scored for the Wildcats. Keely Forbes was player of the day with a very skilful display in goal. She used the goalie box well helping relieve pressure for her defenders.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets were away at Ohope in the 11th grade premier division. They ended up on the receiving end of a result which didn't do justice to how well matched the teams were. In the first half Ohope took the lead, but Cambell Julian equalised after some great teamwork. Player of the day Ben Olifiers made some great saves including an amazing double save at point blank range, before Ohope added two more excellent goals. Kevin Paulsen scored Awakeri's second before half time. Unfortunately, that was Awakeri's last goal and in the second half, Ohope created great opportunities and had a strong spell when they scored several more goals to win 8 - 2. Awakeri kept running and making chances, which was a very positive start to the season.
In the 11th grade 1st division, HTL Spreading Awakeri Crushers were at home to Allandale. The all-girls Crushers team fought hard and made a good game of it, going down 3 – 0 in the end. Emma Ferguson was outstanding in defence and was named player of the day.
In the same grade, Awakeri Store Extreme Strikers had a disappointing loss to Kawerau to start to their season, but they did play with determination. Matthew Reihana-Asquith and Rhylee Mahy scored goals for the Strikers. Player of the day went to Kaleb Robinson for his all round game. This Saturday the two Awakeri teams meet each other in a much anticipated game.
Great teamwork and fantastic passing saw R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors win 5 - 0 over Allandale in the 9th grade. Oliver Forsyth (4) and Elijah Wetting scored with Bonnie-Marie Wetting receiving player of the day.
Also in the 9th grade, the SLH Contracting Awakeri Dragons went down 1-0 to Ohope Bluefins. The team played very well and their commitment to the full 40 minutes was extremely satisfying to watch. Player of the day went to Rhys Robertson whose skills on attack and defence were excellent. Fearghus Byres and Keighly McNeil also impressed.
Awakeri's best result came in the 8th grade. Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Lightning played a fabulous game against Saints Stingers, working together and showing a big improvement in playing as a team. This showed in the result as they won 6 nil. Ollie Fort scored three goals showing great speed and excellent accuracy. Jamie Hawkes showed great determination, resulting in the second goal. Myles Ashton brought his excellent ball skills into play, scoring another goal and Summer Jones was our player of the day, showing great drive all game, with the highlight being her runaway goal taking the ball from one end of the paddock to the other and finishing with a perfect goal!
This weekend, Awakeri's younger teams will join the action as the 6th and 7th grades swing into gear at Warren Park.
