Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wildcats had tough game against Whakatane Force in the 13th grade, going down 6 -0. Their player of the day was Renske Brabant who supported her right winger well with her usual sound positional play. Jenae Brownless had a good game being strong in the tackle and getting some good contacts on the ball. Individually the Wildcats are doing well and just need to lift the team game.
In the 11th grade premier division, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had a great game against Whakatane Phoenix. Whakatane started well and took a 2 goal lead, but Comets fought back and Kaleb Muggeridge scored before half time. In the second half, Comets battled for everything and were rewarded for their efforts with goals from Cambell Julian and Kevin Paulsen to win 3 – 2. It was a fantastic team performance, but a special mention for Kevin Paulsen who covered the whole pitch and made some amazing runs up the length of the field. Joint players of the day were Tayla Jones for an excellent defensive performance and Cody Cook, who battled for everything in midfield.
There was a good contest between the two Awakeri 11th grade 1st division teams. Awakeri Store Strikers played a well fought game against their counterparts the HTL Spreading Awakeri Crushers but lost 2 nil. Rhylee Mahy kept up the attack, with great defensive play from Thomas Wessells, Matthew Reihana-Asquith, and Maya Wills. Kaedyn Portsmouth was player of the day for Strikers for a strong game and supportive play. Olivia Sheaff and Lilly Du Toit scored for the Crushers and Rylee Looney was their player of the day.
SLH Contracting Awakeri Dragons drew 1 all with the Saints Dragons in the 9th grade. It was end to end stuff, a very entertaining game. Awakeri's player of the day went to Fearghus Byers who played his heart out and scored a great individual goal.
Also in the 9th grade, excellent positional play and teamwork saw R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors win 4 - 2 over Whakatane G Force. Blake Hermansen and Jamie Julian held their positions well for the Warriors, with Blake also having a solid game in defence. Katie Mahy had a brilliant first half in goal before shining in defence for the second half. Jamie Julian started the scoring with two goals, followed by goals to Oliver Forsyth and Bonnie-Marie Wetting. Kalib Schuler was awarded player of the day for his determination and excellent coverage in defence.
8th grade Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Lightning went well, winning 6-5 against Whakatane Phoenix. It got to 6-1 so the coach took an extra payer off. Jamie Hawkes even scored a header goal. The player of the day was Ollie Fort.
The Junior Framework got off to a very good start at Warren Park. The 7th grade Awakeri Pumas had a great first Saturday. Their skill levels are improving, they're starting to pass and there is also the very beginning of some positional play. The team really enjoyed the games with everyone giving it their all. Kaleb Grindrod got player of the day. He listened really well, worked hard on defence and scored a great goal.
7th grade Awakeri Rascals had three great games with Kobi Wetting-Davidson scoring several goals, then making some excellent passes to his team mates to set them up for some goal scoring opportunities. Sophie Growden scored a goal also. Their second game was a close one, they played the other 7th Grade Awakeri team the Pumas - they knew each other which added to the fun and shenanigans, final score 1-0 to the Pumas. The third game was against Ohope, final score was 1-1 after some fantastic clearing kicks from Max Thompson and an excellent goal from Kobi Wetting-Davidson. The girls Sophie Spod, Sophie Growden, Jessie Jones and Ashleigh Jennings played their hearts out and showed the opposition boys they are a force to be reckoned with. Max Thompson was awarded player of the day because of his great kicks which opened the games up.
6th grade Awakeri Sharks had a brilliant day with all players participating fully. Their player of the day was Callum Hathaway for scoring lots of goals for the team.
6th grade Awakeri Eagles had a really good day. They won against James St and Ohope and with a last minute goal to the Awakeri Sharks, Eagles went down 1-0. The Sharks Eagles game was split into boys and girls and there were really good games on both fields!
