There was lots of excitement and plenty of goals were scored in Awakeri's football games at the weekend.
In the 13th grade Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats had a very close match with Opotiki. Opotiki eventually won out 5 - 3. There were many highlights for the Wild Cats. Chloe Howard scored her first ever goal, putting a left footer past the keeper. Sarah Sheaff scored two goals. Emily Robbie was outstanding, feeding her wingers with great through balls. Keely Forbes showed a lot of maturity and good ball control as a right back. Cody Baker Bragg was player of the day with a good effort on the right wing.
Awakeri's two 11th grade premier teams played each other. Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had a win against the all-girls HTL Spreading Crushers who were recently pushed up into the premier grade. The Comets started very strongly and Kevin Paulsen scored two early goals, followed by strikes from Ethan Patterson and Kaleb Muggeridge before half time. In the second half Ben Olifiers came out of goal to play in midfield and scored when his shot from outside the area was deflected in. Cody Cook scored his first goal of the season to complete a convincing 6 - 0 victory. Luella Howe was Comets' player of the day, battling for everything in midfield.
In the 11th grade 1st division, Awakeri Store Ultimate Strikers played Whakatane Town Flames. Awakeri had a strong first half, keeping up the attack and passing well. The second half saw Whakatane come back strongly to win the game 3 - 0. Keegan Jones and Matthew Reihana-Asquith did a great job defending the goal with Matthew getting play of the day for his consistent performance.
Excellent support and team encouragement saw R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors to a 6 - 3 win over Whakatane G-Force in the 9th grade top four. Excellent passing from wings Blake Hermansen and Elijah Wetting saw Oliver Forsyth score a hat trick, with Blake adding two of his own and Elijah rounding off the scoring. Katie Mahy had an outstanding game in defence, making crucial passes and defending her goal.
In the 8th grade, Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Lightning had a great game with all of the team excelling. Lightning beat Whakatane Town Strikers 9 - 3. Ollie Fort, Phoebe Carter, Jon Tiwha-Smith and Myles Ashton got one goal each. Marshall Foxx played exceptionally and got 5 goals. Phoebe Carter was the player of the day, with great attacking skills through the whole game and an excellent goal.
Awakeri Rascals had two games in the 7th grade. The first was against Plains United. Even with some great passing from Sophie Spod and tough attacking from Mickey Griffiths, the score was nil all. Ashleigh Jennings was in fine form and had some great runs up the field against Whakatane Town and Kobi Wetting-Davidson found the goal to go 1 – 0 up. Whakatane Town came back with a goal that surprised everyone and made the Rascals dig a bit deeper and play harder. Sophie Growden and Jessie Jones had a couple of shots on goal but it was Max Thompson who, yet again, was in a perfect position to receive a great pass and put it in the goal to win the game. The player of the day was awarded to Sophie Growden for never giving up and finally getting that ball off the cone twice in a row!
The 6th grade Awakeri Sharks had a great day on Saturday. The holiday break did them a world of good and they came back really keen. They all got lots of time on the ball in the soccer games. Sharks have all come such a long way this season; nearly the whole team scored a goal. Rubi Kennedy was their player of the day, for great ball skills, persistence and scoring the first goal.
