Awakeri's football teams had a mixed bag of results on Saturday but a couple of teams kept up their excellent runs of results.
R. Mahy Contracting Awakeri Warriors kept up their outstanding teamwork to win 3 - 0 over Ohope to remain unbeaten in the 9th grade Top Four division. Excellent passing and support play helped Elijah Wetting, Blake Hermansen and Katie Mahy score for Warriors. Katie was awarded player of the day for her all round commitment and effort in the game.
In the 9th grade Bottom Four, SLH Contracting Awakeri Dragons had a good game with Saints Dragons. Saints took their chances to win 2 – 0. Shaun Snow was Awakeri's player of the day.
In the 11th grade premier division, Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets had another excellent team performance in their game against Opotiki Magpies. Comets started very strongly and Luella Howe scored in the first minute and got a second shortly after. Further goals were added by Kevin Paulsen, Ethan Patterson and Kaleb Muggeridge before half time. In the second half Cambell Julian scored the final goal in a 6-0 victory. Cody Cook was awarded player of the day for his excellent attacking runs and accurate passing.
Also in the premier division, all girls team HTL Spreading Awakeri Crushers had a good game with Whakatane Town Phoenix. The 6 – 0 win to the Phoenix didn't reflect the way the girls played! Rylee Looney was their player of the day.
Awakeri Store Ultimate Strikers had a tough fast paced game against Ohope Surfers in the 11th grade 1st division, losing 8 - 2. Awakeri fought hard with Keegan Jones and Thomas Wessells doing a great job defending the goal. Shayna Penberth scored a fantastic side foot goal, with Rhylee Mahy scoring a well-earned goal as well. Monty Rosewarne was named player of the day for his consistent effort at defending.
Barringtons Motor Lodge Awakeri Wild Cats played Whakatane Town Kahunas in the 13th grade. Wild Cats did well to hold Kahunas to 1 – 0 in the first half, but ran out of steam in the second half to go down 6 – 0. Gemma Bauldey, who works tirelessly in the midfield every week, was player of the day for Wild Cats.
In the 8th grade, Mainstream Engineering Awakeri Lightning's unbeaten run finally came to an end. Lightning played Ohope Swordfish at Awakeri's home ground on Saturday. Lightning got off to a great start, Ollie Fort scored in the first fifteen seconds. But Ohope Swordfish ended up winning 8 - 2. Jamie Hawkes showed great determination and excellent attacking play and was the player of the day.
In the 7th grade, Awakeri Rascals first game against James Street was a great start to the day. Ashlee Jennings finished off a good run by Jessie Jones to score the first goal of the day - much to her surprise and the jubilation of the side-line. Kobi Wetting-Davidson then scored another scorcher to add to his season total, taking the final score 2 - 0. The last two games were nil all draws against Ohope and Kawerau. The player of the day was Ashlee Jennings for the fabulous goal and great attacking.
Awakeri Pumas also did well in their 7th grade play. They are improving each week and are loving their games. Ben Peat was their player of the day.
There was another great morning of football by the Awakeri Eagles in the 6th grade. Their balls skills have improved so much from the start of the season and they are working well as a team now, passing the ball to each other. Kobi Kay had a fantastic couple of games, showing great power in his kicking abilities. He was player of the day.
The Awakeri Sharks had a good day of 6th grade football too. Their player of the day was Talan Kennedy, for getting involved in the game and kicking the ball lots.
