Good team work was a theme with Awakeri's football teams on Saturday.
Private Asset Management 13th Grade Awakeri Comets were at home to the top of the table Whakatane Intermediate Foxy Feet. After a very even start, Whakatane took the lead, but Comets responded well with an equalizer from Luella Howe. Foxy Feet combined well, finding gaps to open up a lead before half-time, and added several more before Kevin Paulsen scored a great long shot consolation goal. Despite losing 7-2 Awakeri showed great team spirit, never dropping their heads or giving up. The players of the day, who kept running and battling for the whole match, were Gemma Baldey and Ethan Patterson.
The 11th grade SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a convincing win away against the Ohope Strikers 2-0. The first goal was a good team effort scored by Cambell Julian in the first half. This was followed by a great goal, where the player of the day Fearghus Byers beat several defenders to slot the ball past the goalie to secure the win.
Also in the 11th grade, Designline Kitchens Awakeri Dragons had an awesome game with Opotiki Panthers. Panthers grabbed a late goal to win 1 - 0. Mia Sutton was named player of the day for getting stuck in and not giving up.
EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Aces played the Opotiki Magpies in the 9th grade. It was a good game, even in competition. Aces had plenty of energy throughout the game and chased the ball to the end. The player of the day was Summer Jones for good wing support and chasing the ball. Mitchell Du Toit was also impressive in his work. Magpies won the game 3 - 2.
Awakeri Titans played St Joseph Tigers in the 9th grade and lost 4-1. Titans were grateful to Nathan from St Josephs who played for them for the whole game. He had a great game in goal and also out in the field. Titans worked together well with Jamie Hawkes scoring the goal. The parents on the sideline were ecstatic. The team performance saw everyone share player of the day honours. Marshall Foxx had a great game in goal in the second half, Mia Kennedy proved again that she is meant to be in defence. Mary Bragg ran and ran and ran. Jamie Hawkes and Isak Tootell were all over the field and Paige Toone held the middle well.
The Awakeri Avengers had a tonne of fun in their 8th grade game! They had a good win against an under strength Plains Superstars team. Everyone in the team got on the scoresheet with Sophie Growden, Kobi Wetting-Davidson and Kaleb Grindrod getting several. It was awesome to see the team work, positional play and passing these kids bring to the game. Player of the day went to Kaleb Grindrod for all round stunning play, but he also netted what is so far the goal of the season.
Also in the 8th grade, the Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas played the Whakatane Town Kahunas, with Ninjas having a comfortable win. Mason Nurkka was the player of the day, with Leon Mahy a close second.
