There was a wide range of results for Awakeri's football teams on Saturday, with the youngest age groups pleased to have their season up and running.
Private Asset management Awakeri Comets were at home to Opotiki in the 13th grade. Comets started well and goals from Connor Hedderwick, Kevin Paulsen and a well taken free-kick by Callum McNeil gave Awakeri a 3-0 lead at half-time. In the second half Opotiki with a strong wind behind them attacked well and completed a comeback with a goal in the last two minutes to earn a 3-3 draw.
13th grade Awakeri Blue Strikers had an exciting game against Whakatane Town Force, with Blue Strikers giving it a hundred per cent throughout the whole game. Force won the game 7 - 1, with Rhylee Mahy scoring the only goal for Blue Strikers. Player of the day went to Rylee Looney for keeping up the pressure in defence.
11th grade SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors had a 7-1 win over Plains Wanderers. The goals were shared throughout the team, but Frank Butler's hard hit volley deserves a special mention. The player of the day was Bonnie Marie Wetting-Davidson.
Also in the 11th grade, Designline Kitchens Awakeri Dragons had a 1 all draw against Opotiki Leopards. Dragons went ahead with good goal by Keighly McNeil. Leopards equalized later in the first half. That set up an exciting second half with both teams having their chances. Player of the day Carrie Read produced some great passing skills and committed tackling.
The EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Aces played a good game on Saturday in the 9th grade. They were playing a really tough team but never gave up. Aces lost 1-5 to Whakatane Town. Phoebe Carter received player of the day for good attacking skills and scoring a goal.
Awakeri Titans played Whakatane Town Phoenix in the 9th grade. Once again Titans showed total commitment and had a really good first half. Bianca Turner nearly scored their first goal, hitting the post, but it deflected away. In the end, the Phoenix proved too experienced for the Titans with 6-0 the final score. The player of the day went to Jamie Hawkes for the amount of work he did in defence.
In the 8th grade, Awakeri Avengers had an impressive win over the Whakatane Snappers, 6 - 0. Ashlee Jennings had an awesome game, putting in some great tackles and backing up her team mates. She was player of the day.
The 7th grade Awakeri Panthers showed lots of enthusiasm and determination in their first Junior Framework but unfortunately lost all three games. Charlize Butler stood out with her attacking skills and Tylah Bateson showed impressive defensive skills. Asha van Veen got player of the day for being an amazing defensive player and giving a full effort the whole time. The team has lots of potential!
In the 6th grade, Shed Boss Awakeri Phoenix played their first game against Ohope Jellyfish winning 3-0. Alex Whiteman scored two goals and Isla Thompson one goal. The next game was against Poroporo. Phoenix won 1-0, with Alex Whiteman scoring the goal. The third game was against Ohope Piranhas,who won 1-0. The players of the day were Alex Whiteman (for scoring three goals), Isla Thompson (for scoring a goal) and Rese Kay (for great defence). What an awesome team effort.
Awakeri Magic did very well in the 6th grade. They had quite a few players sick. Thanks to Awakeri phoenix for lending two different players each game. Magic had three good games, one draw and two good wins. There is a star in the making: Ollie Peat scored a total of eight goals with the help of his team! Another to stand out was Aaron Best.
6th grade Awakeri Athletic won all three games on Saturday, having done the same on Bay Day. Saturday's results were: 3-0, 2-1, 3-1. Everyone is having fun and enjoying being part of the team.
