Awakeri's football teams were pleased to be back playing after a long holiday break.
The 6th and 7th grade resumed their football at Warren Park.
Shed Boss Awakeri Phoenix's first 6th grade game was a 2-2 draw against Allandale Midgets. Their second game was a 1-1 draw against Ohope Piranhas. Alex Whiteman scored the goals in both games. Phoenix then beat the Dolphins 6-0. The goal scorers were Tyler Wardlaw (3), Max Schlepers and Alex Whiteman (2). Players of the day went to Rese Kay and Billy Butterworth. Rese had an excellent game in defence. Billy also had a great game and came close to scoring twice. The team's passing and defensive efforts were impressive.
Awakeri Magic's 6th grade team only had five players show up: Ollie Peat, Jayden Grindrod, Zara Harvey, Aaron Best and Bailly Rowlands. They all played well and came away with a draw and two good wins.
6th grade Awakeri Athletic remain undefeated with Saturday's results being 3-0, 2-1, 0-0. The goal scorers were Arran Dominick with four goals and Kyle Hennessey-McKay. Player of the day went to Eli Tootell after displaying great enthusiasm and foot work on the ball. Aramia Hanlen was another player contributing well across all three games.
Real Awakeri had a good day in the 7th grade, with Tejay Robinson the player of the day.
7th grade Awakeri Panthers were on fire in their three games after the holidays. Zoe Laurent scored her first goals of the season (3) and was player of the day. Milan Laurent also scored her first goal of the season! The girls all positioned themselves well on the field and played really well as a team, making their coach and parents proud.
In the 8th grade, Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas continued their merry way with a comfortable win against Allandale Strikers.
Awakeri Avengers found it tough coming back after the break in the 8th grade, and had their first loss of the season, going down 6-2 to Ohope Snappers. Kaleb Grindrod was player of the day.
EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Aces had a really challenging 9th grade game against the Allandale Flyers, playing on a full sized field. Aces didn't give up and got better at their attacking. It was a good game with Allandale winning 5-1. The player of the day was given to Jon Tiwha-Smith for awesome attacking skills and chasing up the ball. He also scored a goal.
Awakeri Titans went down 6-0 to Whakatane Strikers in the 9th grade. The Titans seemed to still be on school holidays for the first half, but after a rev up from the coaches at half time, they came out fighting in the second half. Although the score line did not go their way, the team once again gave it their all and did not give up. Marshall Foxx ran a marathon in the second half as did Jamie Hawkes, but players of the day went to Mia Kennedy for her determination on the field and to Myles Ashton for some awesome defence in the back line. The team as a whole did their coaches proud.
11th grade Designline Kitchens Awakeri Dragons had their first win of the season against Opotiki Magpies. The score was 6-2 with Jack Elliott scoring twice, Carrie Read scoring and with Keighly McNeil named player of the day, scoring three goals and not giving up. Dragons showed excellent teamwork and determination, having no subs to call on.
Also in the 11th grade, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors lost away to Whakatane Phoenix. Warriors' player of the day was Thomas Wessels.
13th grade Awakeri Blue strikers played Opotiki Scorpions. Awakeri battled hard but unfortunately lost 7-1. Maci Bateson and Daniel Brown fought hard the whole game. The player of the day was to Kyla McGuire who had a fantastic game as goalie. A good combination saw Shallan Keighley set up Rhylee Mahy, who scored Awakeri's goal.
