Lots of good performances meant sharing out the players of the day in several of Awakeri's football games on Saturday.
Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets were home to Saints Storm in the 13th grade. Awakeri had the perfect start when Kevin Paulsen was bundled over in the first minute. Ethan Paterson hit a perfect penalty to open the scoring. He added a second when he was quickest to the rebound after a good shot from Tom Kloppenburg. Saints scored a well-deserved goal to reduce the lead before half time. In the second half Awakeri's passing game was much improved. A fantastic teamwork move, starting in their own half and involving six players, was finished well by Ethan for his hat-trick. It was a good team performance from Comets in their 3 - 1 win. The player of the day was awarded to Emily Robbie for great running and passing and Callum McNeil for outstanding defensive play and organisation.
Also in the 13th grade, Awakeri Blue Strikers had an exciting game against Whakatane Town Avengers, sadly losing 6 - 0. Blue Strikers had a lot of possession but unfortunately weren't able to score. Player of the day went to Ella Jones for making good use of opportunities when she had the ball.
Cambell Julian scored a great team goal for the SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors 11th grade, but after holding the lead for most of the game, they ended up losing 4 - 1 away to the Opotiki Orcas. The player of the day was Fearghus Byers.
Designline Kitchens Awakeri Dragons lost 2 - 1 to the Plains Wanderers in the 11th grade. The Wanderers scored their goals early on with two great shots from their striker. The Dragons came back strongly with a great strike from Carrie Read. In the second half, the Dragons had more possession and many shots on goal but could not convert. Player of the day went to Rhys Robertson, who showed great anticipation and skill around the pitch.
In the 9th grade, Awakeri Titans went down 8 - 2 against Thornton. Titans started the game with only one injured sub and a very sick Myles Ashton on the field, but the kids showed their normal feisty spirit. Titans got their two goals in the first ten minutes, the first ones of the season! Both players and parents were very excited. The running took its toll on Myles and the injured Paige Toone took to the field. Super goalies Isak Tootell and Jamie Hawkes had great halves, fending off many a shot. Player of the day Mary Bragg scored both of Titans' goals. A second player of the day nomination went to Jade Moloney for her runs up the sideline.
Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas had a comfortable win against Whakatane Town Snappers in the 8th grade. The Ninjas team is playing really well at the moment. Ben Peat got player of the day. He is becoming a good midfielder, with a high work rate on attack and defence. The team practised running up the wings then crossing during the week and there were a number of goals from great crosses. There were goals scored from corner kicks too, another skill that had been practised. Brad Yuill scored another great goal, hitting a moving ball with a first time strike over the heads of the defenders.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Avengers had a 7 - 1 win over the Whakatane Town Kahunas, with some great passing and positional play on display. Caleb Hanlen was player of the day for his courageous defence and two scorching goals.
In the 7th grade Real Awakeri won all their games. Ryan and Owen Ashton shared player of the day for their efforts.
The 7th grade Awakeri Panthers played so well together as a team. They kept Ohope Beach scoreless with the final score being 0-0. Rhriane Byers showed some great attaching skills. Our game against the Real Awakeri boys was 0-1. Paige Short was the stand out in this game. The Whakatane Plain Rangers were too strong for our girls, we lost 0-4. During all the games Charlize Butler has amazing defence, no fear and a big kick on her. The player of the day went to Tylah Bateson, for her great defence and attack during all games, also sticking to the ball where ever it went.
Awakeri Athletic continued their undefeated run in the 6th grade, since the opening day of competition. Athletic had a 6 - 1 win, a 0-0 draw and a 2 - 0 win on Saturday. Both Arran Dominick and Kyle Hennessy-McKay clearly brought their shooting boots and collected three goals each. Jed Moloney and Eli Tootell both got on the score sheet securing one goal each. Player of the day was Jed Moloney after delivering an outstanding personal performance.
Awakeri Magic played really well in their three 6th grade games, with everyone in the team giving it everything they had. Players of the day were hard to pick. In the end they went to Bailly Rowlands, Zara Harvey and Jayden Grindrod.
Also in the 6th grade, Shed Boss Awakeri Phoenix's first game was against Saints Stars. Tyler Wardlaw scored the only goal of the game. Their second game was against Ohope Jellyfish. Well done to Natalee Carter for scoring the only goal in this game. It was a great team effort, with a lot more passing around and defending the ball. Phoenix's player of the day was Max Schlepers, who had a great attacking game, nearly getting two goals.
