Private Asset Management Awakeri Comets were at home to Awakeri Blue Strikers in the 13th grade. The Blue Strikers put up a gallant resistance and the game stayed goalless for quite a while before Ben White scored the opening goal for Comets, which was the first of an eventual hat-trick. Further goals were added by several other players, including first goals of the season to Gemma Baldey and Ben Olifiers. The Comets eventually secured a 7-1 victory. Player of the day awards for Comets went to Campbell Kelly for some good defending and great passing into space, and Tayla Jones who was captain for the day and played a strong game in central midfield. The whole Blue Strikers team played one of their best games, with Lily Du Toit scoring a great goal. Their player of the day went to Rhylee Mahy who gave it her all the whole game.
On Thursday, Awakeri Comets were away to unbeaten Whakatane Intermediate Foxy Feet in a 13th grade catch-up game and played their best game of the year. They constantly hassled the opposition and were rewarded with a goal from a brilliantly taken free kick from Callum McNeil. Comets increased their lead when Kevin Paulsen hit a shot into the top corner to lead 2-0 at half time. In the second half Foxy Feet came back and scored two good goals from distance. They were then awarded a penalty which they scored to take the lead. Comets never gave up and came close a couple of times but couldn't find an equalizer. It was a very exciting game which Foxy Feet admitted was their toughest game all year. Player of the day awards went to Callum McNeil and Ben White for some brilliant defensive work and Kevin Paulsen for another 100% effort, battling for everything.
Designline Kitchens Awakeri Dragons had a great game in the 11th grade against Opotiki and won 4 – 3, which was a great boost to their confidence. Determination and good team play led to goals being scored by Carrie Read, Mia Sutton, Shaun Snow and Rhys Robertson. Player of the day went to Shaun Snow for his excellent improvement over the season.
Also in the 11th grade, SLH Contracting Awakeri Warriors lost 5 – 1 to Whakatane Phoenix. Frank Butler was the player of the day.
In the 9th grade, Ohope Tiger Sharks and EBOP Plant Services Awakeri Aces had a very enjoyable game. Aces put up a good challenge. They were short on reserves so it was a hard game. Jon Tiwha-Smith received player of the day for great wing support, getting 3 goals and doing well as goalie in the first half. It was a close game, with Ohope winning 4 - 3.
Awakeri Titans played Allandale in the 9th grade and went down 6-0. With the introduction of Stevie Read and Kenna Baker to the team the Titans once again went out in force. The team once again showed great determination but were overpowered by the opposition. Players of the day went to Jade Moloney and Kenna Baker. A special mention goes to the impressive Chase Read and Mitchell Bragg for playing for the opposition to help with numbers.
The Eastern Bay Curtains 4U Awakeri Ninjas played Opotiki and won 6 - nil, remaining unbeaten in the 8th grade for the season. All five players who played were standouts, but the player of the day went to Ben Peat for his skilful passing.
Also in the 8th grade, Awakeri Avengers came away with a 4 - 3 win against Allandale Strikers. Max Thompson and Caleb Hanlen were awesome as a backline. Max also had a run up front and grabbed an awesome goal. Kaleb Grindrod, Chase Read and Michael Griffiths all performed well in the mid field. Kobi Wetting Davison was polished up front netting a hat trick, Jessie Jones once again showed her skills on the wing. Ashlee Jenings showed a lot of heart and never gave up. Player of the day went to Sophie Growden for her commitment and flair.
Awakeri Panthers girls team had a great morning in the 7th grade. They won the first game but lost the next two. They enjoyed playing the Real Awakeri boys team, even though they lost! The whole Panthers team worked well together and the 'team' were the players of the day!
Awakeri Athletic displayed one of their grittiest performances to date in the 6th grade. With great team work and enthusiasm on display, two 3-0 wins were secured but the first loss of the season was also experienced. Goal scorers on the day were player of the day Arran Dominick (with 5), Kyle Hennessy-McKay and Jacson Heal.
Also in the 6th grade, Shed Boss Awakeri Phoenix played Plains Panthers, losing 2 nil. Phoenix were a little slow to get started, but there was good defending by Rese Kay. Their next game was against Ohope Jellyfish. Tyler Wardlaw scored the only goal. Tyler did some great kicks across the field. Well done to Addison Griffiths for a great pass to set up the goal. Unfortunately Opotiki didn't turn up for their last game so Phoenix joined another team and played Ohope. We helped them to win 2 nil with Alex Whiteman scoring the two goals.
Awakeri Magic all turned up with lots of energy for their 6th grade day at Warren Park. Magic played two awesome games, with nearly everyone scoring a goal. Player of the day went to Zara Harvey.
